The Substance

We are excited to welcome back Kyle Strobel to The Substance! Kyle is a preacher, the Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology and Formation at Biola's Talbot School of Theology, and the author (and co-author) of several excellent books.

You may remember Kyle from when we had him on back on Episode 66 (Listen here!) and talked about our relationships with power. We highly recommend checking that out if you haven't yet!

This time Kyle joins us to talk about something we'd all like to have a better handle on- prayer. Topics include: What's on the line when it comes to our prayer lives, "the good news" of prayer, why we shouldn't try to "fix" ourselves, the role of personal and communal lament in our prayers, and more!

We hope you enjoy and are encouraged by this. If you are consider sharing it with your friends and family as word of mouth is the best way to spread the show!

Hey everyone! It's a little different this week.

Last week we announced that, for now, The Substance will be transitioning to a biweekly release schedule. We love doing the podcast and putting it out for free but we all have a lot more responsibilities than we did when we relaunched and in order to continue to put out biblical, thoughtful, human, and substantive content on a regular basis we needed to make this change. Episode 102 will come out next week and we will be on an every other week release schedule going forward for the time being!

In the meantime, we have a library of 100+ episodes that are designed to be evergreen. Feel free to go back and check out the episodes you may have missed and share them with your friends & family who would appreciate them. And if you'd like to help us ramp things back up release-wise, this may be a good time to join us as a monthly supporter on Anchor!

It's been a while since we've covered a classic book on the show and we are excited to shine the spotlight on one that was a first time read for all 3 of us! G. K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy is a classic of Christian apologetics and has been in print ever since it was originally published. Joining us this week is Trevin Wax. Trevin is the VP of Research & Resource Development at the North American Mission Board, visiting professor at Wheaton College, regular columnist at The Gospel Coalition, and author of several titles including a beautiful new Annotated Edition of Orthodoxy from B&H Academic.

Orthodoxy was an absolute pleasure to dive into and we had a wonderful time with Trevin. We hope you enjoy the show and be sure to share it with a friend!

*Special Announcement* For the foreseeable future, The Substance will be transitioning to a bi-weekly release schedule in order to make our deadlines and keep things substantive on the show while managing all of our other non-podcasting responsibilities properly. We are grateful to folks who listen and pray that the podcast will continue to encourage the Church and be a light in the world for a very long time. We just want to pace ourselves!

On this show we'll be looking back on favorite episodes and moments from #1-99, things we've learned over the years, goals for the future, and we'll also be hearing some words of encouragement from a handful of our past guests.

Welcome back to another episode!

We were super excited and blessed by our guest's this week John Onwuchekua (John O for short) and Keith Pinkney from the AMAZING podcast Windows & Mirrors where they say, "The Bible is more like a window than it is a mirror. We come to it to look through it and see God. We don't come to it primarily to look at it and see ourselves." We had great conversation learning about John and Keith's history, the vision and impact of the podcast, and so much more!! You will not want to miss this one.

Let the record show that Trevor is out this week because he was attending a John Mayer show (featuring previous Substance Shoutout recipient Yebba) and not all the bad guesses that Philip & Vincent came up with.

We thought that we'd maybe do a Topic Toss Up show when we started recording but it quickly became apparent that we'd be spending the whole episode on the most recent Julie Roys article about the abuse and cover ups at John MacArthur's church, Grace Community Church. To be clear, while we believe that the testimonies, documents, and facts show that John MacArthur and GCC both handled and are currently handling this in an extremely inappropriate, harmful, and ultimately ungodly manner, our goal is not to simply target and "take down" their character or ministry. Hopefully, shining a light on such horrific things will be a catalyst to humility and accountability and eventual repentance, from JMac & GCC as well as untold numbers of other churches with similar underlying problems that lead to similar devastating situations.

Your feedback on this issue is more than welcome! We encourage you to read the report in its entirety, listen to our full discussion, and then send us a DM, email, or voicemail at your convenience.

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter and are excited to be back in your ears!

On this episode we are joined by Hannah Chao of SOLA Network. SOLA Network is a Christian platform designed to influence the next generation of Christians (and current & older ones as well) specifically with a focus on Asian Americans, both creating content directly relevant to their experiences as well as being a platform to highlight and publish writers within that community to the larger American Church.

We cover a number of topics: the unique experiences that members of varying Asian American communities endure (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.), California geography, the benefits and challenges that Asian Americans are currently experiencing due to their increased representation in pop culture, the state of "Women's Ministry" in the modern Church, the "controversy" surrounding the Disney Pixar movie Turning Red, and more!

If you enjoy the show, consider taking 30 seconds and writing a 5-Star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and sharing with a friend who would also enjoy it! 😃

We love sharing great movies with you all and it's especially enjoyable to highlight a film that is generally overlooked or that a majority of people may not be familiar with. This week we are looking at David Lynch's 1999 film The Straight Story. The movie is best experienced without knowing much about it (so if you haven't seen it before, stop reading and watch it now!) but it's a beautifully human, true story about a 73 year old man and the lengths he went to to try to reconcile with his older brother before anything else happened to them. More than one of us on this episode consider it a perfect film.

Our guest for this conversation is Relevant Senior Editor Tyler Huckabee. Tyler is a movie lover and has been a David Lynch fan for a long time. We talk about how The Straight Story is both an anomaly in Lynch's filmography as well as how it make complete sense. And be sure to listen all the way through for a great celebrity crush story that Tyler was generous enough to share.

**We are taking next week off for Easter Sunday to rest and enjoy the time with loved ones and hope you all have a wonderful, restful time. Feel free to share a favorite older episode with a friend and we will be back in your feeds the following week on 4/24!**

We're closing in on our 100th episode and today we've got our 20th Topic Toss Up!

First up, we've got the first voicemail of the year (2022 is, in fact, The Year Of The Voicemail. Give us a call!). It follows up on our discussion with Propaganda about cursing, along with tying into a very early episode of The Substance. Then, a semi-recent episode of Brett Goldstein's podcast, Films To Be Buried With, brings up an interesting discussion about the line between social commentary and exploitation when it comes to depicting crime/evil in film and television. Finally, we follow up on something brought up on Episode #90 and talk about Black culture's relationship with anime.

We hope you enjoy! If you do, please share with a friend and consider writing a 5-star review on Apple or Spotify!

Happy April Fools' Day!

This is a silly idea we had way back in 2019 before we took our unplanned year and a half hiatus (see "Special Annoucement" between episodes 12 & 13) but we're happy to finally share this very bad movie with you all! Manos (Spanish for "hands"): The Hands of Fate is a famously bad movie resurrected by the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team in 1993. It was made by a fertilizer salesman on a bet and it really shows. But even though every aspect of it is a train wreck, there's something undeniably charming, and human, about this very very bad movie.

And we are also excited to have a friend of ours from way back join us for this one! Jacob Berardi is a longtime friend who we have watched loads of movies with who has been working in the film business for the last 10+ years primarily as a camera opperator and cinematographer.

We hope you have as much fun with this one as we did!
