The Substance

We’re back with another Substantive Cinema show!

This week we’re looking at Terrence Malick’s spiritual masterpiece “The Tree of Life.” It’s not an “easy” film, but if you go into it with the right mindset, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more substantive moviegoing experience.

Joining us this week for our discussion is film critic, author, and Senior Editor of Arts and Culture at The Gospel Coalition, Brett McCracken. Brett has been a film critic for over a decade and has written extensively about Terrence Malick and his films, and is the perfect guest to help us dig into the deep themes presented in this film. Check out a few of his articles on the film:

Not everyone has the same standards when it comes to what kind of media they feel is appropriate to consume. What are we to make of the wide variety of convictions and practices of fellow believers and those who claim Christ? How do we develop our own standards and what role does conscience, culture, and community play in the process?

Join us as we think critically about these and related topics this week! As always, please contact us and let us know what you thought and what topics you’d like to hear us cover as we go forward.

This week we dive into a Biblical question: Does the Old Testament advocate evil? We explore the Canaanite conquest and even consider a theology of disaster. There were a lot of questions we couldn’t get to as well - what questions did we leave you with? Let us know!

This week we take a deep-dive into Paul Schrader's incendiary 2018 spiritual masterpiece First Reformed. Trevor conflates actors with super spies and proposes a crazy theory (tell us if you agree)! Philip tries not to make weird mouth sounds and talk over Trevor. We also have a really wonderful time discussing the film's plot and themes.

*Disclaimer* This was our first recording. Ever. So it'll be a bit rougher than the others.

Also a word of caution that we discuss the issue of suicide in this episode. If you are triggered by these issues, you may want to avoid this one. If you need, you can get some support, or call the national hotline at 1-800-273-8255 confidentially.
