After being hit with a big wave of literal deaths of close family members, dating 2 men who suffered from a narcissistic personality disorder, and fielding multiple microaggressions and macroaggressions in love, life, and career as an African American woman, I almost lost my life. My anxiety and depression had become chronic and my interior life was an unmanageable, scary place.
Of course, that’s not what people saw on the outside. I had a great career, was in good shape, and lived in a beautiful place. I was professionally and socially popular, had a loving family, and a host of friends. However, if anyone looked beneath the surface, or read between the lines, they would have seen the cracks in the plaster that held my life together.
It wasn’t until an undergraduate college English composition professor asked me to write about a tragedy I’d overcome, that I began to heal and align and I knew I was onto something big and significant. Read my full story here.
