In the this episode of The Surfcast Podcast, Jerry and Toby talk retrieve speeds when fishing the surf. The classic narrative is that slower is always better, especially when targeting striped bass, but is this based in anecdotal evidence or just something someone said once that caught on from that point forward? Are there times when speed kills and others when speed is the key to success? Be sure to check out the episode to hear their thoughts, you might be surprised at what they have to say.

In this episode of the podcast, we discuss an interesting phenomena that recently happened to Toby- and it's a reminder to check your hooks on every cast, no matter the conditions. This is something many anglers fail to do- and it seems early-season apathy got the best of Toby for a few casts, too!
This is our first "hot take" episode, where we discuss something that just happened while we were out fishing. We haven't come up with a name for it yet, but are open to suggestions.

Surf fishing is riddled with hurdles we must get over in order to catch trophy fish- or any fish at all, really. There are things we contend with that many other fishermen don't have to think about- from weather and access, to casting distance and the dark, there are lots of factors to juggle. Since it's already a challenging form of fishing, the last thing you want to do is be making mistakes that hurt your productivity even further.
While Jerry and Toby work tirelessly to eliminate anything that might interfere with their ability to catch fish, they are also quick to admit: they make mistakes ALL the time. Recently they both made a couple of classic mistakes that hurt their catch rates, on two totally different tides.
In this episode they'll take you through these mistakes so hopefully you can avoid them on your next outing in the surf.
