After covering deeply the suicide texting case yesterday I have realized something I never said that I should have.  That being that suicide is a horrible thing no matter how it happens and it always stems from a darkness that one believes will never end.

I think something that should drive this home is that suicide is the 10 leading cause of death in the United States, averaging over 45,000 people a year.  Conversely about 15,0000 murders occur in our nation every year.  Translation is an average person is 3 times more likely to end their own life, than to be killed by another person.  Given this is The Survival Podcast, I think after over 9 years it is about time we discussed in depth the 10th leading cause of death in our nation.

However, today’s show isn’t only about suicide, it is about depression and darkness both of which often lead to suicide.  Though they quite often lead simply to unfulfilling lives or even shattered lives.  While I am not a professional counselor and nothing I say today should be taken as such, I am going to do my best to discuss dealing with darkness based on my own life experiences.

Avoid toxic people, friends, family, etc.

Don’t conflate responsibility and blame

Remember what you really are, spirit

Remember that what you do DOES matter

TweetNicholas is the Founder and Director for the School of Permaculture, where he leads the education programs and directs operations at both the farm and suburban demonstration sites for the school. Since 2012, Nicholas and his team have worked on a large and varied number of permaculture projects from farms and ranches, to suburban homesteads and public parks, to apartment complexes and college campuses.

He has received his permaculture education and training, in person, from the co-originator of permaculture Bill Mollison in Melbourne, Australia. He also interned with world renown permaculturist Geoff Lawton at Zaytuna Farm and attended the Earthship Academy for natural and recycled building construction, under the tutelage of Michael Reynolds in Taos, New Mexico.

Aside from permaculture, and ecologic-related activities, Nicholas is a devote follower of Jesus Christ, a husband, and a father. He is also a nidan and instructor at the Flowing Circle Aikido Center, plus a major proponent of peace. He believes that through the application of permaculture, people can find a more meaningful and purposeful existence.

Today he joins me to discuss permaculture and his new course on landscape assessment.

Time for a fun and easy going show today.  I am so sick of politics and economics and people being screwed by the state, how about we just talk about fishing today.  Yea they make you buy a license to do it but those are pretty cheap right?

Anyway I find there are generally two types of people when it comes to fishing.  First there are people that love it and second there are people who have yet to try a method of it that they love.  Seriously so many people I talk to that don’t like fishing say things like….

Its boring – Response, you don’t know how to fish

It’s too hot – Response, don’t go when it is too hot

It’s too expensive – Response, you are doing it wrong

I can’t find a place to fish – Response, tune in to today’s show

Saying you don’t like fishing to me is like saying, “I don’t like beer” you just haven’t found your brand yet.  Fishing can range from sitting in the shade with line in the water enjoying a beverage and almost hoping nothing bites to a wilderness adventure where hiking in is the hardest thing you do on the entire trip.

My wife said often she didn’t like fishing but when I introduced her to small river small mouth everything changed.   Standing in the crystal clear moving water about thy deep in an old worn our pair of shoes and cut offs on a July day, catching 100+ bronze brawlers in a single day changed that for her.  To the point where I was the one saying “okay time to go” and she was the one responding with “wait, one more cast”.

Today I just want to talk about fishing in a variety of ways, how to find spots to fish, what to try to simply get started and even a bit about the advanced electronics currently being installed in my boat, can you say automation?

Since TSP announced the original Permaethos Model, Rob Kish has been working to make it a reality- with a few twists.
