Today it is time for a relaxed and fun show, we are going to talk about one of my favorite things in the world to discuss and do, cooking.  Cooking is a life skill that is frankly dying in America.

When I was in high school home economics was still a thing, mostly girls took it, or smart boys like I was who knew we would be surrounded by girls.  Something happened in my generation though, most of us knew how to cook but we seem to have failed in passing it on to the millennial generation.

One of my goals at TSP is restoring skills to people, from changing a tire, to setting a trap to cooking.  Cooking gives us so much if we embrace it.  Cooking is not just a way to make food taste good, is science and history and culture all in one wonderful thing.

Sean O’Hanlon, twenty-five years old from Maui, Hawaii. Eaglescout, an Associate graduate of Mechanical Engineering from New Mexico Tech and a custom knifemaker.

Up until recently also a live aboard sailor who called the Pacific ocean his home. For two years he and his girlfriend sustained a life off their vessel like a satellite off of the Islands of their upbringing.

Greater economic forces were and still are at play in the state of Hawaii, where housing prices are so competitive local people regularly spend upwards of $1000 per room/month and do not get paid very well.

Sean O’Hanlon has been a fan of TSP since he discovered it in 2011, and with it learned an awful lot about how to live a better life, and times were indeed tough.

Having never owned a boat before, let alone living on one, the couple had to learn everything from scratch. Soon after purchasing the boat they were hit with almost every difficulty the world could throw at them.

Engine failures, electrical shortages, perpetual lack of safe harbor, ripped sails, tropical storms, and even the dangerous waters of bureaucracy (Which is still suspect to be involved in the eventual shipwreck of their home).

They are now moving to a more rural location on a cheaper but underdeveloped Island to start again and build up their custom knife business. They are jump starting their project on Kickstarter.

Sean joins me today to discuss Living in a real life dystopia, being pressured to set off into the unknown, developing creativity and learning to constantly adapt.

I keep quite a few things set up on Google New Alerts. That is where you run a search for a term on Google News and ask them to send you an email when ever a given word or phrase pops up in the news. So as you might imagine I do this for terms like “pandemic”, “economic collapse”, “natural disaster” and many others related to the preparedness industry.

I also have terms set up that are more on subjects connected to basic self sufficiency and homesteading. As you might imagine I include the term “permacuture”.

The other day that alert sent me a link to an article called, “Traditional Farming in the Rain Forest”, it led to an article that was a scathing retort on permaculture calling it basically useless.

The author gets almost every single part wrong. It wasn’t that we disagree mind you it was that his claims and assertions were simply 100% inaccurate. Despite this it has helped me to better understand many of the objections I hear about permaculture.

Today I plan to discuss them and try to answer some of these objections, hopefully with a now better understanding of what the objection is really all about.

TweetBen Page starting listening to the survival podcast in July 2008 while going to chiropractic college in Davenport, Iowa. He lived 5 miles from college rode his bike to collage. It took him depending on the season between 15 and 45 minutes to get to college. He used that time to listen to the survival podcast and learn about modern survivalism and now considers himself to be a modern survivalist.

There is where his thought process went back to its roots and is why he is doing what he is doing know. Ben Page is a chiropractic physician where he focuses on what he calls the 4 vital points to wellness and how all 4 have to be in harmony to truly find wellness in ones life. He started a small family farm called Pastos Verdes Farm in southern Utah more then anything to provide for his family nutritious food that tastes good.

He farms using permaculture and regenerative methods. He uses Joel Salitin’s method to raise the meat birds. He also started a podcast in english called “The Wellness Farmer Podcast” and in Spanish called “El podcast la salud integral” where he podcasts once a week about the 4 pillars to health, which are adequate movement, nutrient dense food that is grown on fertile soil without chemicals, natural internal dialogue and chiropractic care.

After working with another chiropractor for 5 years he realized that he needed to move on and with the information he obtained listening to the survival podcast he started a new adventure. Ben now resides in Rosario, Argentina where he continues to serve the public as a chiropractic physician and continues to podcast about health and wellness. You could say that his business like many others was pushed forward and came into existence because of the Survival podcast.

We talk a lot about what I call “lifestyle design” around here.  When people hear that term they get the general idea, because the words are common.

Lifestyle – The way in which a person lives.

~

Design – Purpose, planning, intention and thought behind an action.

So lifestyle design means to put purpose, planning, intention and thought into how you live your life.  So yep people generally get the basic concept, what people usually struggle with though is designing a lifestyle for today that is resilient for tomorrow.

I think we have all had those moments, we are happy, really happy with our life as it is, then one or two things change and we are off the rails.  Sometimes these are external factors like a job loss.  Other times they are internal factors sticking with employment perhaps we realize we hate our jobs but hey it pays the bills.

Those are only two examples, and no one can plan for everything but today things are even more complicated.  We all know the next few decades will have more flux in them than anything man kind has yet to experience.  AI and automation will replace thousands of jobs, economic reality will be hitting hard for many governments and technology gaps will make finding jobs harder than ever.
