David ____________________ his words until he simply must call out sin V. 1-3

If you have ever struggled to know when to keep silent or when to speak up, King David could ______________________!

________ of the 9 uses of the word ‘Hebel’ (vanity, breath) in the Psalms are here in Psalm 39.

David knew he needed to make the most of each day, and he shouldn’t take any day for granted. He also was well aware of his ________________. We do well to remind ourselves of the same things.

Let me urge you to often do what David does in the Psalms. During your prayer time, tell God that you ______________ the truth – You are weak but He is strong, and all your hope is in Him!

    1 John 1:9

David knew that he was more likely to be heard by sinners when he spoke if he was in ___________________ relationship with God.

  • Before our Bodies Fail - 10/1/2023 Sunday Sermon

    Before our Bodies Fail

The Feast of Tabernacles reminded Israel that they lived in tents on their way to the Promised Land, and was given of God to remind Israel of the difference between temporary hardships and eternal satisfaction in their God.

There are 4 major themes in Ecclesiastes we have seen repeated, and all four of them show up at the end of the book:

Nothing we engage in apart from God will bring us meaning if pursued as an end in itself; God has a beautiful plan for our lives that we can begin experiencing in this life; God gives us the ability to enjoy life now even in the midst of hardships; By faith we need to revere God and live our life within biblical boundaries.

    Read Ecclesiastes 12

Remember God before you lose your bod V. 1-8

He uses the word evil here because aging and death themselves are unnatural results of original sin. They never would have happened if Adam and Eve hadn’t sinned, and won’t be present on the New Earth of Revelations 21-22.

For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end, like a sigh. The years of our lives are seventy, or if by reason of strength, eighty; but their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. -Ps. 90:10

Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. -2 John 1:8

Impending death is irreversible – it is the aging process that will not get reversed until Jesus turns us all into Benjamin Buttons on the new earth!

But Solomon also calls death the ultimate thing that is fleeting – the body has died, but the spirit returns to God who gave it.

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. -2 Corinthians 5:1

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. -Hebrews 9:27-28

Respond to God while you can V. 9-12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. -Hebrews 4:12

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17

Trust and Obey for you’ll stand before God one day V. 13-14

    Psalm 38 Worksheet

Psalms 9-10, 25, 34, 37, 111-112, 119, and 145 are acrostic psalms, but not this one. By the way, the tribute to the Proverbs 31 woman in Prov. 31:10-31, is acrostic, as well as the first four chapters of Lamentations.

Psalm 38 is an individual ________________________.

It looks like David is experiencing some kind of sickness and believes that some of it has happened because of his own _______________.

There is not always a direct connection between our sin and some sickness or affliction we are facing, but there certainly can be!

In verse 5 David is clear that part of what he is experiencing is because of his own ______________________.

    <><

David vividly describes the _____________ he is feeling V. 1-11

Some of David’s words in these verses look a lot like what Job was experiencing in the book of Job.

    Job 6:4; Job 33:19; Job 19:13-19

Sin does have built in consequences that can be experienced before we ever start speaking of the “______________________” judgment of God.

Despite his agony, David still trusts the Lord, as seen in verse 9 – My desire is before you; I know you hear my sighing. I think here David is basically stating that God is his only ________________.

David understands his enemies would love to see his ________________ V. 12-20

According to the second part of verse 20, why are these people David’s enemies?

Jesus told me I would have trouble in the world – John 16:33

Verses 13-14 show David’s more _________________ spirit toward his enemies, even while he is down and out.

Verses 17-18 show David’s _________________ as a believer. He can’t control whether this is the death of him or not, but he can confess his sin and be ready to meet God if this is his time.

    Philippians 1:19-26

  • Go For It! - 9/24/2023 Sunday Sermon

Go For It! - Ecclesiastes 11:1-12:1

Today we will see Solomon’s message to young people and others who are anxious about making wrong decisions – if you love God and you are already committed to live according to biblical truth, when you have an opportunity to do something for Him, GO FOR IT!

    Read Ecclesiastes 11:1-12:1

Anxiety is defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Interestingly, the dictionary presents the following antonyms (opposites) for anxiety: Faith, collectedness, composure, confidence, contentment, joy, peace, security, tranquility.

Committed believers should be people of action V. 1-6

He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. -Psalm 126:6

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” -Jim Elliott

In Chapter 10 Solomon advised us to plan ahead and prepare for what we will face; here he wisely instructs us not to put off what we need to do because of what might go wrong.

Committed believers trust God is unfolding His plan in their lives V. 5-8

When you hold a child, you appreciate the beautiful little person that God has brought into the world. Like that, one day you will understand how God was bringing all things together in your life, making everything beautiful in its time!

Good and evil run on parallel tracks and usually arrive at the same time. -Evangelist Ron Dunn

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed are for us and our children forever. -Deuteronomy 29:29

Did you know that the word decide comes from the Latin word decidere, meaning ‘to cut off?’

We can stop pleading with God to show us the future, and start living and obeying like we are confident that He holds the future. -Kevin De Young, Just Do Something, page 42

We must say no to anything that the Bible calls sin. We must obey the Holy Spirit when He won’t give us peace about a course of action through prayer. It is good to get godly counsel on a matter. But don’t live in fear of “missing God’s will” when decision time comes – Go for it!

Committed believers go for it! V. 9-10

But if you love God and are committed to staying within His biblical guardrails for your life, the word here is to GO FOR IT!

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” -Psalm 37:4

Maximize your life for God’s glory while you can, because you can’t go back and do it again. But remember that we will give an account to God for it all, so stay away from what’s off limits!

  • 4 Indicators of a Rescuing Church - 9/17/2023 Sunday Sermon

4 Indicators of a Rescuing Church – Dr. Kenny Warren - Mark 2:1-12

There is something special about seeing someone physically rescued

There is something even more special when someone is spiritually rescued

    1. Rescuing churches INVITE people to experience Jesus.

Who do you need to invite to experience Jesus?

Who do you need to invite?

    2. Rescuing Churches are INNOVATIVE in their approach to ministry.

How can you be spiritually innovative?

    3. Rescuing churches move past those seeking to IMPEDE the rescue mission.

Four kinds of people in every church – Positive, Negative, Multipliers, Dividers

If Jesus attracted pharisees then churches that are RESCUE mission-driven will also.

    4. Rescuing churches EMBRACE the messiness of ministry.

Who repaired the roof on this house? Who cleaned up the mess?

If the Tabernacle is to continue being a RESCUING ministry, it will require individuals who are not afraid to get messy.

Are you COMMITTED to the rescue mission?

This passage speaks of the danger of apostasy for some; but it speaks of the power of ______________________ for those who believe.

A close reading of the text shows the author’s primary concern is to motivate his Christian reader to persevere because ______________ times lay ahead.

Real Christians have ______________________ faith – they accept (and keep on accepting) Jesus Christ V. 39

The word perdition here is the Greek word apoleia – it is used 19 times in the New Testament – almost always to speak of destruction for those who ________________ Christ.

  • Psalm 37 - 9/10/2023 Sunday PM Study

    Psalm 37 Worksheet

This Psalm is both an elaborate chiasmus and ____________________ arranged.

The basic message of this Psalm is that things aren’t always as they ___________; we can trust God & seek Him even when it doesn’t pay short term dividends!

Many of the verses take on a Proverbs like feel to them, so we could classify Psalm 37 as a _________________ Psalm.

Notice three times in the first 8 verses David implores the people of God not to be ___________________ by the appearance of the evil getting their way.

In verses 1-8 there are eight “do’s” that __________________ our attention from the four “do not’s.”

    Ephesians 6:12 1 Timothy 2:1-4

How many occurrences of the phrase “inherit the land” are in this Psalm?

    _______________

What a great promise in verse 24 – Though the righteous falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord _____________ __________ _____________!

    Isaiah 41:10, 13

Here (verses 18a and 23) David says to the agitated, “You’ve been wondering if God cares; He’s _____________________ about you!”

Their inheritance will last _____________________ (18b)

God says, “the wicked never give back to the earth as much as they _________!”

As is typical of chiastic structure, the main point is in the ___________________.

There was nothing left to speak of after the burnt offering. And there will be nothing left of the wicked to speak of either.

  • Do Not Mess up Your Testimony - 9/10/2023 Sunday Sermon

Do not Mess up Your Testimony

“I could not tell him that then,” Gandhi replied, “because three days ago I was also eating sugar!”

    Read Ecclesiastes 10:1-20

Believers must be vigilant because sin can mess up their testimony V. 1

With God there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our sins and turn back to Him – but some foolish actions we engage in have ongoing consequences and limit the rest of our earthly impact.

Embrace godly choices and avoid foolish behavior V. 2-7

But Solomon is speaking here of making right choices that honor God instead of wrong choices that are sinful and dishonor God.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” -Prov. 15:1

Prepare for what you will be facing so you will be ready V. 8-11

If you need to chop down some trees, sharpen your ax first, and you’ll have a better go of it than those who just swing away zealously with a dull blade.

If you don’t learn how to deal with snakes, they will bite you before you learn how to deal with them!

Think before you speak and don’t talk too much! V. 12-15

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. -Eph. 4:29

When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise. -Prov. 10:19

Don’t celebrate until the work is finished! V. 16-20

The proper time to celebrate is after the work that needs to get done is gotten done. The proper way is to celebrate in such a way that relationships are strengthened and nobody gets drunk.

Drunkenness is forbidden in the Bible, but not all use of alcohol. However, strong words of caution are given, along with many examples of alcohol use leading to sin (Noah, Lot, etc…). I believe based on the Scriptures and scientific findings that almost everyone will be best served by reducing or eliminating the use of alcohol in their life. There are plenty of non-alcoholic ways to celebrate!
