    The Least We Can Do

    Hebrews 10:19-25

For 10 chapters he has spoken glorious words about who Jesus is and the sufficiency of His work on our behalf. Now he starts in on how we should _______________ to so great a Savior and so great a salvation!

    The firm foundation V. 19-21

We can enter boldly! Enter what? God’s _______________!

Enter how? By the _____________ of Jesus!

The least we can do in response to so great a Savior and salvation is:

What are we to stir up? Love and ___________ _____________

The author of Hebrews explains that the reason we are not to forsake the assembling has __________________ to do with whether or not our needs are being met.

    Eph. 4:11-16

  • Now is the Time to Make Changes! - 9/3/2023 Sunday Sermon

Now is the Time to Make Changes!

“It is not well to pray, ‘Thy Kingdom come,’ unless we are willing to work to that end.” -W. Holman Bentley (1855-1897)

“If it were a gold-mine we had discovered, it would be easy to find men willing to come.” -W. Holman Bentley (1855-1897)

After we die it will be too late for non-believers to turn to God for salvation, and too late for believers to make choices God will reward in eternity.

    Read Ecclesiastes 9:1-18

Right Choices must be made BEFORE you die! V. 1-6

The key word Solomon started Ecclesiastes with was ‘Hebel’ – the things in this life ‘under the sun’ are “Hebel” if we try to bring meaning from them without God – Hebel can be translated as Smoke, Vapor, Temporary, Fleeting.

But then Solomon brought God into it! He said God has set eternity in our hearts, that He makes everything beautiful in its time, that He has been seeking the people that sin has driven away from Him. It is worth it to know Him.

Verse 3 gets to the reason death will happen to us all -we are not just people who sin, we are sinners who do evil things by nature and choice.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. -Rom. 3:23-24

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Rom. 6:23

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. -1 Cor. 15:22

If you then, who are EVIL, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? -Jesus in Luke 11:13

Why is there hope for the living but not the dead?

Because there is still time to make choices that will impact eternity! There is time for the lost to turn to Jesus for salvation; there is time for the righteous to do that which God says He will reward! After we die that is all settled forever (Read Jesus’ commentary on this at lunch today in Luke 16:19-31).

“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not something to be waited for, it is something to be obtained!” -William Jennings Bryan

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and then the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. -Hebrews 9:27-28

Right Choices must be made TODAY! V. 7-12

This is the 5th time now in 9 chapters that Solomon has extolled the believer getting to enjoy what his or her work product has generated under God-given boundaries! I think He means it!

If Solomon wanted Old Testament believers to enjoy the status their faith in God brought, how much more should we as Christians, who will stand before God robed in the righteousness of Christ? -See 2 Cor. 5:17

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. -Galatians 5:1

Believers, Christ has taken all the punishment your sins deserve on Himself – forever! Unbelievers will be punished for their sin forever – but not you.

The godless person says to himself, “there is no guarantee of tomorrow, so I will eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow I will die.” The godly person says to herself, “I will enjoy life now within God-given boundaries, for tomorrow I will give an account to God.”

Right choices can SAVE a city V. 13-18

“I have heard if we remain healthy, that our most productive decade is in our 60’s and our second most productive decade is in our 70’s. The Bible doesn’t say anything about retiring. I am a big believer in Eph. 2:10, which says, ‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ I want to be able to stand before the Lord and hear Him say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’” -Dr. Terry Douglas, Developer of the Pet Scan, Funder of Kingdom ministry

Clean Is as Clean Does - Hebrews 10:1-18

    Queen for a day

The author of Hebrews is just about to get to some practical matters that should be true in the life of every believer. These are things that real Christians just do. But God is so good to us, before He asks us to do, He reminds us of who we ______________ in Christ.

Here he teaches that those who are saved are not just already saved, they are already _____________________.

To be sanctified is to be __________________ and set apart for special use.

We have been sanctified AND we are ________________ sanctified. V. 10, 14

In God’s mind your salvation is ________________________ - He is the Author of your faith and He is the Finisher of your faith!

When we find out here that we are sanctified forever, that we are perfected forever, he is saying something about us that was ________ said about the things sanctified in the Old Testament.

    Acts 20:32 Acts 26:18

By _________________, Christian, you will grow to be more and more like Jesus – He has set you apart to do His will. Don’t forget that who you are in Christ comes before what you do for Christ!

    Philippians 1:6

Once you become a believer, you will no longer experience God’s punishment. God will ___________________ you, but not punish you. You may experience sin’s built in consequences, but not God’s punishment! Calvary covers it all!

1Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." 3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4"Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

    Psalm 35 Worksheet

Psalm 35 is one of the imprecatory Psalms, in which the one praying asks God to decisively ________________ with those who have hurt God’s people and cause.

Lord, please fight ______________________ those fighting against me V. 1-8

When Psalm 35 was written, Israel was God’s unique nation, and David was God’s King. Attacks on Israel and Israel’s King, from without or ______________________, were really attacks on God. David pleads with God to do something about it.

Keep in mind that David is not taking matters into his own imperfect hands, He is asking God to take matters into His ________________________ hands!

You and I need to make sure we are truly seeking first God’s kingdom and righteousness, like Matthew 6:33 says. When we do, we also need to ___________________ God to deal with those who don’t like it because they don’t want God’s will done.

I think those are great things to pray for those who have made themselves God’s enemies – Just don’t forget to ask God to ___________________ them also!

    Praise chorus #1 – I will praise in my ____________________ V. 9-10

    Lord, they haven’t _______________________ your golden rule like I have V. 11-17

It is good to study to give Christian answers. But there are also godless people out there that don’t want answers – they want to trip us up, to confuse our church kids, to _______________ ungodliness and rejection of God.

Now verse 13 lets us know that David really did have a heart for God and people, and sought to ________________________ the golden rule.

    Praise chorus #2 – I will thank You _____________________ V. 18

Lord, speak up for the ____________________ ones in the land V. 19-26

All through the land God has his quiet ones. They love the Lord. They love their King. But they are timid and not speaking up for God and His leader. And all around them are these ____________________ voices trying to turn them from God.

In verse 22 David asks God to use God’s voice to have the last word! God will always have the __________________ word. David asks God to speak sooner rather than later.

Praise chorus #3 – The quiet ones will praise you a little ______________! V. 27-28

  • Living in Two Realms at the Same Time - 8/13/2023 Sunday Sermon

Living in Two Realms at the Same Time

    Ecc. 8:1-17

Living with an increasing glow V. 1

And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. -Daniel 12:3

Living under earthly authority V. 2-9

The believer’s default mode is to obey earthly authorities V. 2

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do so with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. -Hebrews 13:17

The believer needs to choose his battles with authority wisely V. 3-5

Do not be too quick to quit when you disagree with an authority figure.

Don’t join a rebellion against the authority figure.

Don’t second guess everything the authority figure does.

Do carefully and prayerfully choose the time and way to speak and act.

The believer needs to add value even when he or she is frustrated V. 6-9

Let me give some advice for those considering making a change: Make sure you add value to your organization and leader until God leads you to the next place; make sure you finish your time there in a godly manner; try to set them up for success after you leave; don’t burn bridges you might need to cross over again.

Eternal life to come V. 10-13

Living with present joy V. 14-17

He means it! You don’t just have to endure life and than die; you can thrive in this life now as you experience God’s presence and joy despite life’s hardships – and then you get to go be with God forever!

And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. -Jesus in John 17:3

Ecclesiastes is placed in the Jewish Ketuvim (Writings), and subclassified with 5 “Megillot” scrolls read during feasts – Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther. Ecclesiastes is read during the Feast of Tabernacles.
