According to the CSIR, 45% of the nation’s available food supply is wasted annually. Food Waste occurred during the early phases of production: Post-harvest handling, Storage and Processing. In 2021, 10.3 million tonnes of edible food earmarked for human consumption does not reach the human stomach.
Our next guest has been working towards ending hunger since October 2019 and have delivered over 38,6 million meals in the last three years. Their team has rescued 11,7 million kilograms of food to date through their technology. As the food rescue and hunger relief organization commemorates, it will work towards eradicating hunger with a focus on Sections 27 (Health care, food, water and social security) of the South African Constitution. Around 20 million people are on a spectrum of severe food vulnerability and the government is not fulfilling its constitutional obligation to address this catastrophe.
