This morning we catch-up with Cllr Victoria De Beer - Executive Mayor at the Ngwathe Municipality in the Free State. Her municipality has been in the news for all sorts of reasons, from water shortage, owing lots of money to Eskom and having her parental house burnt earlier this year. Media reports indicated that the house was burnt by an angry mob, allegedly protesting about the lack of water in the area, but she believes it was all politically motivated. She now joins us on the line to talk about the state of her municipality and how she’s hoping to turn things around….

This morning, we reflect on a year since Russian armed forces invaded the Ukraine by catching up with the South Africans who were on the ground in the days leading up to the conflict, their journeys out of the country and where they are today.

Focus: In past 4 weeks, the start to the academic year has gotten off to a rocky start as students took to the streets to raise issues surrounding campus life around the country: financial exclusion and accommodation crises.

In the past week, protest intensified in Gauteng and images from live crossings reflected similar scenes to the Fees Must Fall era. Last week was also marked the second anniversary of death of Mthokosizi Ntumba who died at the hands of police during the last protests of this kind. This morning, we ask why nothing is changing in higher education surrounding these issues and whether there should be an alternative funding model put in place given the failures of NSFAS and Universities to close the gap.

Guest: This morning, we are joined by Dr Ebrahim Harvey. He wrote an article about how the ANC should rethink the District Development Model. It was initiated by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his 2019 Budget Speech. According to COGTA, the Model consists of a process by which joint and collaborative planning is undertaken at local, district and metropolitan by all three spheres of governance. This will result in a single strategic Plan for each of the 44 districts and 8 metropolitan geographic spaces in the country, wherein the district is seen as the ‘landing strip’.
