The SA Law Reform Commission, which is mandated with advising the government on the development of the law, has recommended the introduction of a maternity support grant for poor pregnant women, putting the cost of such a move at about R3bn a year. The commission has concluded after years of investigations that the country’s social protection system does not provide maternity and parental cover to the vast majority of self-employed workers who work in the economy's formal and informal sectors. Last week the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security cluster briefed the media giving an update on how they have been dealing with crime in the country. Police Minister Bheki Cele too centre state assuring citizens that they have the situation under control. He also blamed the media for not doing enough to highlight some of the gains they have made in dealing with some of the toughest areas that were riddled by crime.

This morning we talk to a victim of medical negligence to get a sense of the impact it has on the quality of everyday life. Hlengiwe Mbambo went in for a Hysterectomy surgery to remove her uterus, but things went horribly wrong. She has been hospitalised seven times and has undergone more surgery due to complications. She now joins us to talk about her experience. Also to talk about coping with an experience of this nature.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development Men’s Forum will this coming Friday be honouring men who have positioned themselves as positive role models in society. The awards are being used as an intervention to curb gender based violence that has plagued the country. So we thought to use this opportunity to talk about this initiative and also to men about adding their voice to the scourge. What are men doing or should be doing to groom boys against abuse and respect to women? The other major problem is how men forums often speak to men who don’t abuse the women in their lives, how then do they reach the abusers?

The problem of substance abuse seems very hard to deal with as more and more young people introduce themselves to new concoctions with very devastating effects on families and communities. In light of this, the Department of Social Development and the Central Drug Authority will from tomorrow (Tuesday) host the 3rd National Summit on Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the theme: “Towards sustainable, coordinated and impactful strategies for national drug and substance use in South Africa”. They are trying to find ways to realise a country free of substance abuse through various interventions.
