Mark Green has spent almost 30 years in change management — the discipline of helping people in the workplace through big transformation, usually the kind driven by technology and system integration, and increasingly by AI. He'd fallen thoroughly out of love with it: the monotony, the round tables and PowerPoints, the talk of Kotter and change curves, the traditional consultancies selling in ways he disagreed with. His answer was Change Rebellion, launched in April 2023 and built deliberately to be different — no salespeople, no chasing RFPs, just PR, marketing and, in his words, "me being a madman on LinkedIn." Personal branding before everyone was doing it; an approach designed to make people laugh, think and actually remember the message.
The heart of this conversation is what changed him. At Christmas 2020, in the middle of lockdown, Mark and his family caught the Delta variant of COVID. They recovered; he "took the more scenic route" — two months in an induced coma, then another two months relearning how to walk, talk, eat and drink. He talks, with striking candour and warmth, about emerging as "Mark 2.0" (his wife prefers this version, and so does he), about the financial cliff-edge of being a contractor with no income and two tiny boys at home, and about how his new perspective made him incompatible with the old way of working. The rejection he met when he brought "off the wall" ideas to traditional consultancies became the fuel for going out on his own.
There's plenty of lighter texture too: a very funny aside about AI's habit of always telling you you're right (and the claim that some models turn miserable after about seven prompts), Mark's ambition to land a TEDx talk, and a genuinely useful thread running underneath it all — that you never get technology change without human change, and nothing works unless the people are bought into it.
