Adam Isles and his business partner Ashley opened The Electronics Hub in Woolston, Southampton, after being made redundant when Maplin Electronics closed. Six years later they're on eBay, Amazon, have a website, and are planning to add workshops so young people can walk in off the street and learn to solder, code with Arduino and build things.
The conversation takes a philosophical turn that somehow feels right for Valentine's Day. Adam has spent years studying human behaviour — Simon Sinek's Start With Why shaped his staff training method, Malcolm Gladwell's Blink explains why he can predict what a customer wants from the moment they walk in, and Joe Dispenza's Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself has been his current obsession. He's thought deeply about how we attract what we project, how our subconscious brain pattern-matches faster than conscious thought, and why one small thing — a genuine smile at the door — is the single most powerful thing any retailer can do.
On AI, Adam thinks it will do a full loop: everyone's piling on right now, but people are craving face-to-face interaction post-COVID, and one day it might be a selling point to advertise yourself as the place where no chatbot answers the phone and you can just walk in.
