This week’s podcast episode covers two things – I tried to make a Thirteenth Hour water game (one of those briefly entertaining / frustrating games where you have a little tank of water with a button you push to try to get little rings onto the pegs embedded in the walls of the tank.  I thought I could open it up and replace the rings with infinity signs, but it didn’t work.  After several attempts and several broken water games, I just decided to change the backing design.  Here’s how they came out:

They’re still not terribly interesting to play, but maybe that was never the point …?

The rest of the episode, I read from a draft of the Thirteenth Hour sequel, narrated by Aurora, who is hunting.  The passage also describes some aspects of the home she and Logan built.  I recently did an Istagram livestream where I painted Aurora from that scene:

    • Travelling inevitably can be stressful (hopefully in a good way), but one that also brings to mind a concept described by Joseph Campbell, the hero’s journey (or heroine’s journey) – involving a usually reluctant protagonist who is called or forced into action and has to grow from their current (usually unassuming state) to become the hero that is needed.  After a series of trials, they, if successful, achieve their goal and return back home changed by the experience.  A lot of the films that inspired The Thirteenth Hour had this general structure – The Rocketeer, The Last Starfighter (reluctant heroes), The Neverending Story (unassuming hero – a child – goes on a desperate quest), Labyrinth (teenage girl goes on a quest to save her brother) – so it’s no wonder Logan’s journey in the story follows a similar structure.

      • The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #463: Update on "There's a Wild Heart Beating" (acoustic) Live + More Work on "No Hero"

Originally aired on June 24, 2024.

This week's podcast episode follows up on what I started last week - I did end up playing "There's a Wild Heart Beating" at a local restaurant that holds a monthly open mike for singer-songwriters to practice and work on new and old material.  Really nice that that exists.  It was nice to play live again as well as listen to what other people were working on.  Then, I work a backing vocal track for "No Hero," which is a song for the next Thirteenth Hour soundtrack LP that I have gotten stuck on numerous times so far - any forward progress at this point is a plus in my book!

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #462: Revisiting “There’s a Wild Heart Beating” (acoustic) in Guitar + Piano

            https://archive.org/download/podcast-462/Podcast%20462.mp3

This week’s podcast episode is a throwback to a song I did in 2017 – “There’s a Wild Heart Beating” that is to accompany a future Thirteenth Hour sequel soundtrack.  I wanted to revisit it in acoustic format to see which would be easier to play live with one instrument, so for this episode, I try it out on the guitar and the piano.  There is already an acoustic version out, though no acoustic piano version.  The original was a pretty complex song that had multiple synth, vocal, and electric guitar tracks, but it’s really something that can’t be played unplugged by one person, hence the need to strip it down to something more of the singer-songwriter variety.

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #461: The Hero’s Journey and Travelling

                https://archive.org/download/podcast-461/Podcast%20461.mp3

This week’s podcast episode was inspired by some recent travels and a few articles cited in the podcast that gave some helpful ideas on how to deal with the potential hardships that inevitably will occur when you are traveling: 1.) breathe!, 2.) be open to change, 3.) be helpful, 4.) be thankful, 5.) be open to wonder, and 6.) to paraphrase a often used Chinese expression – eating bitter helps you taste sweet.

Though travelling inevitably can be stressful (hopefully in a good way), but it’s one that also brings to mind a concept described by Joseph Campbell, the hero’s (or heroine’s) journey – involving a usually reluctant protagonist who is called or forced into action and has to grow from their current (usually unassuming state) to become the hero that is needed.

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #460: Finding a Home at Princeton University Through Sympoh, the 25 Year Old Breaking Crew We Started

                    https://archive.org/download/podcast-460/Podcast%20460.mp3

This week’s podcast episode is a bit of a trip down memory lane as I recently went back to my undergrad university, Princeton, where three friends and I started breaking in 1998 – Justin Liang (who was on episodes 47, 48, and 255), Sherwood Forlee, and Tim Ferriss.  I don’t think any of us at the time would have imagined that the club we started, later christened as Sympoh in 1999, would still be around 25 years later, but it is, and each time I see what the current members are doing, it always kind of blows me away.  I figured I would put some of that early history down while I still remember it.

One weird thing about trying to learning to break in the mid to late 90s is that aside from a few underground pockets that had been stoking the embers since the 70s, it was a pretty dead art by then for most of mainstream America.  So if you wanted to learn, you basically had to dig up old movies from the 80s, like Breakin’ or Beatstreet.  (Speaking of the latter, the battle at the Roxy from that movie is still great decades later).

Aside from that, there was very little info out there unless you managed to find a crew.  The only legit info I had been able to find prior to finding these guys in college existed on the nascent internet – the website of a Swiss breaking crew – the Spartanic Rockers – called “Cardboard Only.”  Although that site no longer exists, there is still a website for the crew, which you can view here.  Other than that, my only real visual models came from memories of breakers dancing in the subway of NYC as well as a few scattered clips from TV – notably karateka Jamie Webster‘s character, Grey Wolf on the mid 90s martial arts show, WMAC Masters, doing windmills:

And then in the 1996 Olympics, Russian gymnast Alexey Nemov did flare and mill combos during his floor routine.  Here he is during demonstration, I think after the games had finished:

Other than that, if you could find VHS tapes of footage from jams or battles, that was the Holy Grail, but those tapes were hard to get and sometimes very poor in quality, having been dubbed multiple times.  We also didn’t have easy access to televisions or VCRs in college so if we wanted to watch one of them, we had to use one of the public TVs around campus, which weren’t always accessible, as the rooms were often locked or someone would have already reserved the room, and many of the TVs did not have VCRs.  (I have managed to find some of this footage online, e.g., this one.  They were basically home videos, so the camera work and overall flow of these videos often left a lot to be desired.  Still, it was the best we had until technology progressed to the point where it was possible to digitize analog video so clips could be isolated, which meant you could slow things down to see what was going on.)

So we mostly had to teach ourselves, meaning progress could be slow at times.  I’m slow learner at baseline without much natural talent for any of this, so windmills, the move shown above, took me about two years of pretty regular work to learn to do.  Still, I will always remember those practices fondly.  They combined martial arts and gymnastics into breaking, and although we were all working independently on different things, we were all working together to achieve similar goals.  When you are around people like that all the time, you can’t help but get better.

So I’ve always been happy to see that that spirit continues to be a lifeblood of Sympoh in the years since we graduated.  So I wish to thank all the current and past members for their efforts in keeping the club alive and open for all who want to learn.  They con’t to inspire me to continue to practice, even though at my current age of 44 (kind of old for a bboy), things are more difficult and harder to maintain.  At this point, I just to keep up

Just for kicks, I included two mainstream magazine articles I could find that are about 40 years apart – one from the 10/1984 issue of National Geographic World, about kids breaking in NYC, and the second from the June/July 2024 Wall Street Journal Magazine on breaking in the Olympics.  I’d love to know if the kids featured in the World article ever imagined their dance would one day be in the Olympics.  Then again, if you look closely, you can see a young Crazy Legs in the the battle picture, who has spoken about the inclusion of breaking in the 2024 summer games.

This week, I’m discussing the use of the program, Twine, to turn the Choose Your Own Adventure Rocketeer story I recently finished into a text based adventure game.   It’s basically a html based platform, so the end result is a .html file that you can play on a computer or mobile device.  You can even do things like add music, pictures, text entry blocks, and use variables, all of which I did to make it a bit more game-like.  Here’s the skeleton of what it looks like:

                      The title screen:

A few screencaps of the story: with choices:

You can now play the game in beta!  Check it out here!

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #458: Welcome Author, Painter, and Archeologist Alexandra Chan to the Show to Discuss “In the Garden Behind the Moon”

                        https://archive.org/download/podcast-458/Podcast%20458.mp3

This week’s episode welcomes archeologist, painter, martial artist, mother, wife, and author (among other things) Alexka Chan on her upcoming memoir called In the Garden Behind the Moon.  We actually recorded it back in the winter but decided to not release it until now to time this interview with the launch of her book, coming out 5/28/24.  Though there was a preview of the book (in the form of dragon paintings in episode 444 for lunar new year), here it is in full.   In addition, there is an afterparty, so to speak, over at Patreon.  There was some additional audio that we recorded after the episode ended that is being released there, so if you liked this episode, go check out the part 2.  Even if you are not a Patreon member, I have made the post public, so it’s available to all.

We had a great conversation about so many topics, not the least of which are some of the subjects found within her book.  Though billed as a memoir, there is also a healthy dose of introspective personal narrative/exploration, self help, philosophy, and more interspersed in between family photographs, prints of Chinese silk paintings done by the author, as well as musings on the power of myth and legend in the modern era.  Click on the cover of the book below to pre-order (if seeing this prior to 5/28/24).

It’s a tale about her coming to grips with the loss of her parents, especially her father, a larger than life figure, and how myth and story helped not only smooth the grieving process but also created a renewed sense of wonder in life itself.  In the episode, we talk about something my wife and I call “the middle aged doldrums” – that period of time when you as an adult are grinding – career, kids, health, etc – and it’s easy to lose sight of both yourself and a sense of possibility, hope, and wonder in the world around you as you struggle to make it through the day amid all the other demands on your time and attention.  If you have seen The Breakfast Club, you may recall the quote Ally Sheedy’s character delivers:

Sprinkled through the book are traditional Chinese paintings, something she started doing later in life and continued to help rekindle her sense of equanimity as her father was nearing the end of his days.  Here are some of the ones she sent over to share for Chinese new year:

You can find many more such paintings on Alexka’s online painting shop, Rising Phoenix Arts:

You can find about her paintings and books on social media:

                        Goodreads

                        Instagram

                        Facebook

                        Tiktok

Thanks for coming on the show, Alexka, and thanks, all, for listening!

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #457: Welcome My Brother, Jeremy, as we talk about Kull the Conqueror (1997)

                          https://archive.org/download/podcast-457/Podcast%20457.mp3

This week, my brother and I are watching the 1997 film, Kull the Conqueror, very loosely based on the original stories of Kull and Conan by Robert E Howard.  The film is partly based on aspects of the Kull short story – “By This Axe I Rule!” (i.e. the part of the film where Kull takes his battleaxe and smashes the stone tablets of the kingdom rules) and the Conan story “The Hour of the Dragon.”

King Kull, whose stories were used for the first Conan movie and numerous comic books, actually comes back as a ghost in a Robert E. Howard short story “Kings of the Night” to assist another Howard hero, Bran Mak Morn.

Bottom line, read the Kull stories for a different take on the character than the one portrayed in the film.  Click on the picture above painted by Lou Feck for more info.

Check out Jeremy‘s work over at Pixel Grotto, CBR.com, and Classic Batman Panels on IG. If you are of the DnD persuasion, his articles on DnD Beyond may be right up your alley, and you can view his entire portfolio here.  You can also check out his latest book, where he is a co-author: Pathfinder Adventure Path: No Breath to Cry.  Thanks, Jeremy, for coming on the show!
