Episode 17 features Steve Sheppard! Steve is the lead coach for the Tidewater Striders New Energy program. Episode 15 features Will Christian. Will was selected as the Tidewater Striders Outstanding Male Athlete Performance of the Year for 2019. Will is a very successful runner based in our area who currently runs on the US Navy running team. His notable performance in 2019 started with the Austin Marathon in February. He placed 3rd overall in a time of 2:22:59, which would be his fastest marathon performance of the year. His Austin performance was accompanied in February by a 31st place finish at USATF Cross Country National Championships, which made him the 9th military male finisher. The February performances were followed by One City marathon in early March. This time Will got the overall win after going through the halfway point a couple of seconds behind the eventual runner up. His winning time of 2:25:52 was his second-fastest marathon of the year. A few weeks after One City Will placed 3rd overall at Tobacco Road in North Carolina in 2:27:49. His three marathons in early 2019 were followed by a win at the Dismal Swamp Stomp 1/2 marathon with an impressive half marathon time of 1:07:45. We chat about Will's remarkable 2019 resume! We also catch up with Strider’s president Thomas Hicks. Episode 14 with John Price. In episode 14, I sit down with the amazing and legendary John Price. John is coming off of a 340-mile race, and I was able to get him to stop long enough to talk about some of his crazy ultramarathon feats. He shares stories from his many extremely long-distance trips. He had many stories to share including how he started running to lose weight and never stopped! Episode 12 with Ann Hupp! Ann is the co-owner of Mettle Events. She owns the company with her longtime husband Kevin. Mettle Events is a state of the art event services company serving mainly in the Tidewater area, but perform event services all over Virginia, North Carolina and even has timed events for the New York City Marathon. Mettle features many well-known events in our area such as The Dismal Swamp Stomp, MIYE XC series, Yorktown Independence Day 5k and 8k, The Heart of Ghent and many many more. Episode 11 features Bob Schniedwind. If you've run a J&A race, Bob has said your name. Bob and I chat about his longtime association with J&A Racing and being the ubiquitous figure at every J&A race. But there is so much more to Bob than being Leprechaun Bob. We talk about his naval career, post-naval career, and the time he raised his voice as a teacher and scared kids! In episode 10 we are kicking off our membership drive by speaking with some of our awesome Tidewater Strider members about the benefits of being a Strider. We welcome Jon "Flex" Leiding, Jean Phelan, and Marie Price. Jon chats about the benefits of the Strider scholarship. Jean shares information about our summer series races and how the club raises money for the scholarships. And Marie talks about everything else in between! We wrap up the show with a "State of the Union" address so-to-speak with club president Thomas Hicks. He goes in-depth on what the club has done and will do in the community. Episode 9 features Dave McDonald. Dave is one of the most accomplished and successful runners in our area. He is member of the inaugural Tidewater Striders Hall of Fame Class of 2011. We chatted about the highlights of his running career including multiple US Olympic marathon trials, winning the Shamrock Marathon twice, and an amazing 12th place finish at the 1984 Boston Marathon. Dave shares some entertaining stories of how he met and worked with Jesse Owens, and how his wife was almost involved in a police pursuit during one of his races! Mark and Stephanie Manny are two accomplished ultramarathoners in the Hampton Roads running community. Many people are in awe of their ability to manage their careers, raise four children, and still train for and run ultramarathons. Steph and Mark are the first people I met in our running community over 13 years ago, and they are the kindest, most genuine people I know. They make our running community a better place. I was so glad I got to sit down and chat with them about how they met and eventually became a part of the tidewater running community.
