Odette Sansom’s story is one of extraordinary courage, endurance and survival.
In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I look at the remarkable true story of Odette Sansom, one of the most famous women to serve with Britain’s Special Operations Executive during the Second World War.
Sent into occupied France, Odette worked alongside Peter Churchill as part of the SOE network operating against Nazi Germany. Their work was dangerous enough, but betrayal eventually led to their arrest by the Gestapo.
Odette was interrogated and tortured, yet refused to reveal information that could endanger others. She was eventually sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she survived imprisonment and the threat of execution.
Her story did not end with liberation.
I also look at the role of Vera Atkins, the formidable SOE intelligence officer who, after the war, set out to discover what had happened to the agents who had failed to return — and to identify those responsible for their deaths.
Odette’s wartime experiences were later brought to the screen in the 1950 film Odette, starring Anna Neagle and Trevor Howard.
This is not simply the story of a secret agent.
It is the story of an ordinary woman placed in extraordinary circumstances — and the courage she found when everything was against her.
Stories Behind the Pages explores the real people, places and events behind the books and films that have fascinated me throughout my life.
If you enjoy military history, the SOE and the extraordinary stories of ordinary people caught up in war, please subscribe and join me for the next story.
Next in the series: Noor Inayat Khan.

Violette Szabo was a young mother who volunteered to serve with the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War. Sent behind enemy lines into occupied France, she displayed extraordinary courage before being captured and eventually executed at Ravensbrück concentration camp.
In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I look at R. J. Minney’s book *Carve Her Name with Pride* and the much-loved 1958 film starring Virginia McKenna.
I also explore the real story behind *The Life That I Have*—the moving poem written by SOE cryptographer Leo Marks and given to Violette as her personal code poem—and the part played by Vera Atkins in discovering what happened to Violette and the other missing women of SOE after the war.
This is the story behind the book, behind the film and behind one of the bravest women Britain sent into occupied Europe.

Colditz Castle was intended to hold Allied officers who had repeatedly attempted to escape. Instead, it brought together some of the most determined and inventive prisoners of war in Europe.
In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, I explore two remarkable firsthand accounts:
📚 The Colditz Story by P. R. Reid
📚 They Have Their Exits by Airey Neave
I also look back at the classic BBC television series Colditz, starring Jack Hedley, Edward Hardwicke, Robert Wagner, David McCallum, Bernard Hepton and Anthony Valentine.
This story has a personal connection for me. I have visited Colditz on three occasions: first with my old friend Dave not long after the Berlin Wall came down, again many years later, and most recently when I stayed inside the castle itself, part of which is now a youth hostel.
Across those visits, I watched Colditz change enormously. Its museum today is outstanding and brings the ingenuity, courage and audacity of the prisoners’ escape attempts vividly to life.
Colditz also became part of the story in my own novel series, The Parallel Six.
Join me as we go behind the castle walls, the ingenious disguises and tunnels, Airey Neave’s extraordinary journey to freedom, the legendary Colditz glider and the television drama that introduced the story to a generation.
Have you read either of these books or watched the BBC series? Perhaps you have visited Colditz yourself. Let me know in the comments.

This week on Stories Behind the Pages, Tim explores The Password Is Courage by John Castle.
The book tells the extraordinary true story of Sergeant Major Charles Coward, one of Britain's most remarkable prisoners of war during the Second World War. Captured in France in 1940, Coward became renowned for his daring escape attempts, fearless resistance to his captors, and the intelligence network he established inside German prisoner-of-war camps.
In this episode, Tim looks beyond the 1962 film to uncover the real man behind the legend. He examines the historical evidence, separates fact from dramatic licence, and explores Coward's courageous efforts to assist fellow prisoners and help those suffering inside Auschwitz, where his work earned him lasting recognition after the war.
Discover the remarkable true story behind the book—and the film that introduced Charles Coward's incredible wartime exploits to a worldwide audience.

This week on Stories Behind the Pages, Tim explores The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill.
Most people know the classic 1963 film starring Steve McQueen, but the real story began in the prisoner-of-war camp at Stalag Luft III. Written by former RAF prisoner Paul Brickhill, the book tells the extraordinary true story of the Allied airmen who spent months secretly planning and constructing a tunnel beneath the noses of their German captors.
In this episode, Tim looks beyond the Hollywood version to uncover the real history behind the escape, the remarkable ingenuity that made it possible, and the courage of the men who risked everything in the hope of reaching freedom. He also explains what happened after the escape, including the tragic fate of many of those who took part.
Discover the remarkable true story behind the book—and the film that brought it to a worldwide audience.

Many people know The Wooden Horse as one of Britain's greatest Second World War films, but the real story is even more remarkable.
In this episode of Stories Behind the Pages, Tim Heale explores Eric Williams' extraordinary memoir of life inside Stalag Luft III and the ingenious escape that inspired the 1950 film.
Discover how three RAF officers, aided by the teamwork and determination of their fellow prisoners, tunnelled to freedom beneath a wooden gymnasium vaulting horse. Learn why the book reveals so much more than the film ever could, and why this remarkable story remains one of the greatest examples of courage, discipline and ingenuity from the Second World War.
Tim also reflects on his own visit to the site of Stalag Luft III, where the events took place.

Stories Behind the Pages – We Die Alone
Some stories stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
In this first episode of Stories Behind the Pages, Tim Heale explores the remarkable true story of Norwegian resistance fighter Jan Baalsrud, whose extraordinary escape through the frozen mountains of occupied Norway became one of the greatest survival stories of the Second World War.
Drawing on David Howarth's classic book We Die Alone, together with the acclaimed films Nine Lives (Ni Liv) and The 12th Man, Tim looks beyond the drama to the courage, endurance and selfless bravery of the ordinary Norwegians who risked everything to save one man's life.
A story of resilience, sacrifice and hope that deserves to be remembered.
