  • TN174: The art of selling your art – With Cath Brew
Developing a sustainable, successful portable business as an artist brings some unique challenges. While many solopreneurs start with identifying a need and providing a solution, an artist’s business begins with a focus on themselves and their own self-expression. And for many people, art is a luxury, rather than an essential need.
Despite these challenges, it is possible to build a successful online and portable business as an artist, and by using the same approaches to marketing as more traditional businesses!
"As hard as it is to put myself out there consistently, I keep doing it because it simply brings results. "
In this episode, artist Cath Brew explains how she found clarity of purpose and started her business, Drawn to a Story. As an illustrator and author, Cath brings to life what people feel but can't find the words to express. With a focus on Identity, Belonging and Expat Life, her work navigates around redressing the imbalance that 'otherness' creates.
Cath is the author of the book,’ Living Elsewhere’, where she illustrates in impactful images and short stories the highs and lows of life abroad.
Cath shares how thinking strategically about her purpose as an artist, being consistent in her marketing and listening to her clients has helped her grow her business, and how she has addressed the unique challenges facing artists in business.

But there are some businesses that we might think of as being hard to deliver virtually. Interior design is typically one of those businesses that depend on a geographical location and physical transaction.

This episode is recorded shortly after the murder of George Floyd, by Derek Chauvin, a white police officer. I felt deeply troubled to my core and had to ask myself how I wanted to show up. I realize that while I do not have all the answers, I can still use my voice to speak up.
                                  "Empathy is not enough"
In this episode, I also wanted to discuss with you the inevitable question: where is the fine line between business and politics?
But, this has nothing to do with politics. This is about human lives that are at stake.
As a business owner, you are an important part of the society and you make the society what it is.
So instead, I just decided to show up and simply share how I feel, even if I do not have all the answers yet.

We often hear that being in a relationship requires tradeoffs and compromises.
One of the most challenging compromises nowadays for most working couples around the world, and especially expat couples, is one partner giving up a successful career so that the other partner’s career can thrive.
But does it really have to be this way?
We know that in the long run this often leads to tensions in the relationship, causing resentment and loss of identity as well as financial vulnerability.
Starting a portable business to allow the accompanying partner to also build a source of fulfillment and revenue on the move has been the foundation behind Tandem Nomads’ existence.
However, for a business to succeed it needs real commitment. It often happens that expat partners cannot give their full attention to their business, especially when they have children, for the simple reason that they don’t have the right support system, but also because they do not feel supported by their own partner in this venture.
In order to discuss these topics and bring you some guidance of how to deal with these dual career challenges, I invited Jennifer Petriglieri, the author of the book “Couples that Work”, a book on how dual-career couples can thrive in love and in work.
She will share with you what she learned from interviewing more than 100 couples and her big tip on how to make your business a priority, even if you are not the main bread winner.
"An expat job is not secure, your business is the backup plan of your family."
Jennifer is the Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at INSEAD where she directs the Management Acceleration Program and the Women Leaders Program. She has been shortlisted for the Thinkers50 New Thinker and Talent Awards and named one of the world’s best 40 business school professors under 40 by Poets & Quants.
Jennifer is British, married to an Italian husband - they met in Switzerland, lived in Boston and now in France. Therefore, Jennifer knows a lot about duals career couples that live the global nomadic lifestyle.
