Fear and lack of confidence are things that stop so many talented entrepreneurs and particularly expat partners from succeeding in business.
Melissa Parks shares her tips on how to recognize the symptoms of imposter syndrome, and how to deal with it in order to build the right mindset for success.
"You can’t get rid of imposter syndrome, but you can work with it"
Melissa Parks is a coach with her PhD in Clinical and Health Psychology. Through her company, Intentional Expat Coaching, she empowers global nomads to overcome their internal blocks in order to create authentic and fulfilling lives, wherever in the world they call home.
Originally from Seattle (USA), Melissa began her own expat journey in 2009 as a result of being rejected from PhD programs in the U.S. She decided to use this disappointment as a springboard to move abroad where she completed her PhD, began providing therapy to the expat community, and created a successful online private practice.
After spending 10 years in Europe (Madrid and Amsterdam), she recently returned to Seattle, a move motivated by her husband’s job. She’s now navigating the unique experience of her own repatriation process alongside her husband’s cultural adaptation to living in the U.S. for the first time.
In addition to coaching, Melissa also helps other professionals trained as therapists to build, or grow, their own location independent companies. She’s also trained to teach the international, evidence-based Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program and is passionate about introducing others to the tools of mindfulness and self-compassion for cultivating emotional resilience.

Tandem Nomads is celebrating its 4th anniversary!
So many exciting things have happened in the past years but the transition from 2018 to 2019 has been one of the most pivotal moment.
This is an opportunity to share with you my journey, the highlights of the past year, but also my struggles, what I’ve learned from them and what resources I can share with you in order to help you take your business to the next level as well!
“You have to handle your personal life and your business, you can’t separate them”
This episode feels a little too vulnerable for me, as I am sharing also some personal challenges that I have experienced in the past year and how it affected my business. Although I am not yet feeling comfortable sharing too much about it, I think it is important that I start this conversation.
The reason I think so is because I am aware that sometimes I might give the impression that I’ve got it all figured out and I’ve got it all together. But I don’t… And I do not know anybody who does.
Running a business can be a tough journey.  Also, you can’t always separate your personal life from your business, as your business just becomes part of you and who you are. It transforms and grows with you.
                  What you will learn
                  • What were the goals for 2019
                  • What worked and what did not work so well
                  • What are the learning lessons and resources that can also help you take your business to the next level

It is very rare that expat couples manage to alternate who gets to take a position for an assignment abroad, Phil McAuliffe shares how he and his wife managed to do so.
Also, you will get to hear his inspiring story of how he used his time “off” to invest in himself, start his business and turn the loneliness he experienced as a diplomat into an opportunity to make an impact.

“The problem was not to put myself out there, the problem was to put my authentic-self out there.”

Phil McAuliffe comes from Australia and is currently on his fourth diplomatic posting. He had two postings as the posted diplomat (Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul), and two as an accompanying spouse (Caracas and, currently, Wellington). Following a major mid-life crisis while posted in Seoul, Phil started searching for answers around the challenges he experienced in his diplomatic career and his personal journey on the move, but he found nothing. That has inspired him to launch the podcast The Lonely Diplomate where he shares stories of diplomates around the world and helps diplomats reconnect with themselves and the world around them.
Phil is also the author of the book “The Lonely Diplomat– Reconnecting with yourself and the world around you”.
                        What you will learn
                        • What are the challenges that Phil experienced as a working diplomat.
                        • How did he manage to alternate roles with his spouse and how did he experience being the accompanying spouse.

                                  • TN140: How to turn a counseling practice into a successful portable business – With Dr. Sonia Jaeger
Psychologists and psychotherapists are one of those professions that are subject to many regulations and restrictions, no matter in which country they live or come from. Therefore, it often happens that expat partners with such background decide to completely give up their career as counselors or to turn it into a coaching business.

“Psychologists should look at their practice as a real business”

In this episode, we will see how Dr. Sonia Jaeger managed to turn around those challenges to grow her practice online and make it a successful portable business.
Dr Sonia Jaeger is a German-French psychologist, psychotherapist and PhD, she has been living a location independent life as a digital nomad for the past four years while working as an online therapist, providing online counseling to expats and other globally mobile clients in German, French and English.
Growing up with two languages and cultures herself she experienced the challenges and advantages of cross-cultural life from an early age.
After finishing her PhD she decided to take a break and travel the world. However, instead of returning home afterwards she decided to open a private counseling practice online and has been traveling the world ever since. In 2018 alone she went to (and worked from) 12 different countries, from Australia, to Europe all the way to Latin America.
Dr Sonia also mentors other psychotherapists who want to work online and facilitates workshops that broach the issues of mental health while living globally.

When discussing women empowerment and men vs women equality, the conversation often turns around what can we do to change the regulations and how can men step up to allow more opportunities for women.
While it is an extremely important conversation to have, I also want to open the discussion to what is possible NOW and what is between the hands of women to improve their chances to succeed in their careers and business.
“Don’t expect your partner to guess your needs”
I was honored once to be interviewed on a South Korean radio show hosted by Daniel Shin, on the Busan English Broadcasting station, Befm. During this interview I was asked to share my insights on the topic.
My first thought was coming from comparing spontaneously what men and women often do differently, especially when they have a family. I noticed that there is one thing that men tend to do better than women regarding their careers.
