I'm sure I am not the only one who is beginning to tire of the pretentiousness on social media and in our everyday life especially during these crazy times.  I think we are all thirsty for all thing real and authentic.  However, I can't expect that from others if I'm not demanding it from myself.  Demanding that I get real about the condition of my emotional self, how i arrived here and what honestly needs to be done to heal.

On Episode #7 of The Trauma Recovery Podcast, my guest is Bobbi Parish. Bobbi was sexually abused for almost a decade of her childhood. As a result, she felt broken, unworthy, and crushed under an enormous weight of shame. She believed she would never be good enough, deserving of love or valuable unless she was perfect in every way. All of the trauma and lies that her abuser had taught her caused depression so severe she spent many years in and out of psychiatric wards. After finally being diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and finding excellent trauma informed mental health providers she began to make progress in her recovery. Then, she married a toxic man and ended up homeless and deeply mired in depression once again. Working with a new psychiatrist with excellent trauma recovery knowledge, Bobbi finally reached a place of recovery. Now it's her goal to teach other survivors what she learned to prevent them from having to take decades to recover.

Bobbi earned her Master's Degree is in Marriage and Family Therapy 22 years ago. She had a private practice in Portland, Oregon. Six years ago Bobbi moved into coaching because she found its collaborative nature to be more successful in helping trauma survivors. Much of the damage trauma survivors sustain occurs within a relationship (they are abused by parents or battered by a spouse). As a result, much of their recovery work needs to occur within the context of a safe, healthy  relationship. Bobbi works very hard to establish this type of relationship with her clients.

Bobbi and her wife Sarah have the amazing privilege of leading the International Association of Trauma Recovery Coaching (IAOTRC), with Bobbi as the Executive Director and Sarah as Deputy Director. Together they teach and mentor students as they travel through the Coaching Certification process. We offer three levels of certification as well as continuing education courses. The IAOTRC represents and supports Trauma Recovery Coaches as they work with trauma survivors from every walk of life anywhere there is an internet connection.

As a young boy, Clark Fredericks was brutally raped by "a family friend" who happened to be a Boy Scout Leader and a Police Officer in his small New Jersey town.  Subsequently, Clark's life spiraled out of control. Decades after the assault, Mr. Fredericks murdered his attacker in his home.  He was given a 30 years to life sentence. However, when details of his life and the destructive path that his abuser left in his wake came to the light, Clark found freedom, both from the courts and from his demons.

Clark is now a sought after Public Speaker who's message of perseverance through suffering has reached millions of people.

Episode #3 of The Trauma Recovery Podcast features my colleague, friend and fellow Trauma Recovery Coach, Lisa Babcock Hilton.  Lisa has a "laser like" ability to hone in on her clients needs.  I attribute that to her God given gift of perception and her first hand experience with trauma.  

I wanted to have a dialogue with Lisa about Gaslighting. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that makes its victim question their perception of events, their own abilities  and ultimately, their own sanity.  We both agree that this type of abuse (and yes it IS abuse) is just as debilitating as sexual or physical abuse, especially if the gaslighting begins during childhood.

Sly has survived childhood homelessness, life in shelters and group homes and the impoverished, drug infested neighborhood of East New York, Brooklyn at the height of the crack epidemic in the 80's.

Sly and I met in our teens, I actually met him while he was homeless, while we were two crazy kids running around NYC. Despite different backgrounds, we share so much. Our brotherhood has endured for twenty plus years, so much so where he named me as the Godfather to his daughter (a title I hold close and dear). I'm honored to have him as my guest.
