The very first episode is here! Today I talk to Ellen about our experiences with quitting the smartphone and the effects of social media on us all! Don't take anything we say as fact (doubt you will) and take your own initiative to research these things for yourself.
Social media, although it comes with benefits that we couldn't live without in today's world, effects us in unforeseen ways. The best way to experience this is to stop using your phone for a few months - doesn't have to be forever! The improvements across your whole life are quite staggering, especially when combined with some basic goal setting (Next episode). Join in on the conversation a give us your opinion. Although it is a total first world problem, social media is the younger generation's biggest problem (sorry global warming). A world can't be run by a generation lost in their own bubbles of fake news and even faker realities. These bubbles are being created by extremely powerful corporations that are driven by advertisers money.
The book i mentioned and highly recommend can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Arguments-Deleting-Social-Media-Accounts/dp/125019668X This book contains an in depth look at the hard to notice rumblings of our society, as it strains to keep up with the unforseen circumstances of social media.
If you can't convince yourself to quit (which i dont blame you, it took me getting my phone stolen in another country to break the habbit!) there are some great apps out there to help the process along.
Freedom: Users can choose how long they want to be blocked completely from the internet, for up to eight hours.
Anti Social: You choose a selection of websites you know distract you and set a time for how long you want to be blocked from them.
SelfControl: Allows users to block a selection of websites for a set period of time. The app cannot be re-set once it’s been activated, even if you delete the application.
Cold Turkey: Blocks access to a selection of websites chosen by the user. Designed primarily for students as users can schedule websites to block at certain times, which can be repeated on a weekly basis.
TrackTime: This app doesn’t block internet access, but it shows you how you spend your time online so you’re better placed to know if you should only block certain sites or take yourself offline completely.
