    Notable Quotes

    • “What does this mean? I've just had two men tell me that I'm intimidating. And yet I don't have power over either of these men. One is my boss. One is a candidate I'm interviewing. Like, like what is intimidating about me? I think there was something about me that made them uncomfortable. But then you question and go, ‘Is that my problem? Or is that their problem?’ And I've come to the conclusion – it's their problem. Not mine.” – Lisa (40:00)
    • “I went back to HR this time on behalf of myself. And from that minute, I had a target on my back. A few weeks later in a conversation with my boss, the CEO, the harasser's name came up in a business context. And I said, you know, ‘Are you aware of the fact that I've had to go to HR about him twice in the past couple weeks?’ And his response was, ‘Yeah, I heard about that. You know, you just need to learn to get along with him.’” – Lisa (49:37)
    • “There are thousands of women that deal with this every single day. If it could happen to me as a C-level female, you know, what happens at lower levels? You know, what happens to women that don't know what to do, don't know how to fight back? There were things that I didn't know that I learned in the process. I feel an obligation to pay it forward and just share my experience.” – Lisa (1:14:57)

  • 088: Conversation Can Repair Your Elevator Pitch with Mike Verret

In this episode, Dan connects with marketing veteran, branding pro and official elevator pitch repairman Mike Verret. In Mike’s nearly three-decade career, he’s done everything from client service to product strategy to global brand management at Hasbro. The red thread that connected them all, though, was his unique ability to relate to an audience on their terms – and now, through his own marketing strategy company Verret and Associates, Mike teaches other entrepreneurs how to do the same.

Today, Dan and Mike discuss how meaningful connection happens, the value of understanding your audience’s perspective of your business, the power of storytelling in selling, and more.

    In This Episode

    • (02:55) Mike’s background, and the genesis of Verret and Associates
    • (11:46) Adapting to cultural differences in business
    • (18:00) Mike’s “empathetic trigger” as the secret to his interpersonal communication prowess
    • (29:15) “Connection is about getting to a conversation.”
    • (37:40) How does connection happen in a meaningful way?
    • (42:57) The plumber example: connecting to a prospect’s need state via storytelling
    • (47:35) The power of the “I help” statement
    • (50:28) The key to an impactful elevator pitch
    • (1:05:15) The value of connecting with the audience from their perspective, not yours

    Notable Quotes

    • “What enabled [my success] was my understanding of an audience. And that's what I saw as the red thread that ran through my career. What I was best at was relating an idea to an audience on their terms. And that became exactly how I thought about everything. How do you take what you do – say, as a business – and translate that into something that your audience is going to find the meaning in? And that's what I always looked at.” – Mike (15:18)
    • “When you're talking about your business to your audience, the reality is you think a hundred percent about what you do and what you focus on. The audience cares about five percent. I don't care if it's an internal pitch to the C-suite about a new piece of software that's been developed or it's a sales pitch to someone or it's your LinkedIn profile. The challenge is always finding the right 5% to get your audience's attention, keep it, bring them through in the right order and get them to a decision point. It’s really hard to do when you know everything.” – Mike (34:14)

    Notable Quotes

    • “It was just a mouse on the wheel type thing. I was tired of just doing the services. And that's when I fell in love with helping people within the business. And then that's when I went through that kind of matriculation of, okay, what are the habits and characteristics of the people who are hitting home runs and being successful and what are the behaviors of the people who are getting in their own way? And unfortunately, I felt like, oh, wow, I was part of the group that was getting in their own way. And I said, well, how can I help my clients? How can I help myself become better? Because I had that epiphany, that epiphany was like, dammit, if I'm not a hundred percent, I can't give a hundred percent. If my cup's empty, how do I pour into other people?” – Luke (06:43)
    • “You right now in your current state, you're more than enough. You have the absolute capacity to change your life and it starts with you. It's a decision you get to make. A lot of times I've been there where you feel helpless, you feel like you're not enough. You feel like kinda life's against you. And if you can just switch to one little paradigm shift that I learned …if you grow through what you go through, develop that thicker skin, tenacity, skill up in your resilience, you're gonna tackle the next thing stronger, more confident, with more belief in yourself.” – Luke (1:07:01)

You might think the conversation would revolve around packaging, but--spoiler alert--it doesn't. While they do talk about some of Brad's packaging experiences, Brad's journey of self-discovery leads them along a different path. One that focuses more on reinvention, self-awareness, creativity, and more.

  • 082: Depth Over Volume: Succeeding on LinkedIn with Richard Moore

In this episode, Dan connects with UK-based entrepreneur, speaker, educator, trainer, and LinkedIn expert Richard Moore. As the founder of the LinkedIn Client Accelerator and head of growth for Entrepreneur Business Live, Richard has helped hundreds of consultants, possibly thousands, to get clients on LinkedIn. And he does it without automation or any of the tactics so many of us despise--in other words, the right way. He and Dan discuss the “platform abuse” that seems to be rampant on LinkedIn, and what salespeople and marketers should be doing to reject this behavior and use the platform properly. As often happens on the show, we learn that it’s all about relationships, putting the work in, avoiding shortcuts, and having the right mindset.
