Rhinoplasty was one of the first episodes that I sketched out when I was contemplating starting the podcast, but I am just now sitting down to hit record. I wanted to make sure that I had a robust presentation and thorough examination of one his favorite operations. It turned into a case of "paralysis by analysis", not wanting to really record the episode until all the details were perfect.  As it happens, one of the shows I wanted to do first hadn't been done after 10 shows.  What follows is a good rhinoplasty overview, but not the broad scope of the operation I'd planned - including the history of the surgery, famous cases, etc.  Those will have to come later.

Dr. Hall: Today’s episode is going to be pretty interesting and I think that you’ll really enjoy this if facial surgery is something that you’ve had any consideration in at all. Kris Price is a longtime patient of mine, who underwent a facelift about a year-and-a-half ago when this podcast was recorded in January of 2022. And the interesting thing is that during the course of the interview, her recollection of the surgery and what it has done for her is very positive. And this is interesting because she blogged about her entire journey on her own blog that we’ll link in the [show notes 00:00:57].

And the experience that she shares of going through the process of facelift surgery is very different than what she feels about it now. And this really goes to speak to how the journey of facelift surgery—really of any cosmetic surgery—is one of self-discovery and one of constant change. And it’s something that we try and shepherd patients through, that’s kind of what we do as part of the surgery process, but it is something that patients may not really appreciate when they’re considering having cosmetic surgery. And I think it is going to be very interesting for patients who are considering facial surgery to listen to this show, but then go read Kris’s blog, and listen to her accounts of her recovery, for the first year. She writes very detailed descriptions of what she’s experiencing throughout the first year and being able to see that movie before you live it is, I think, going to be very helpful for patients who are contemplating going down this road. All right, welcome to the show. On today’s show, we’re going to talk about a really sensitive topic. Now, most of plastic surgery, most of the stuff that we discuss on the show is really out in the open. Labiaplasty surgery is not there. It is still very hush-hush, obviously, and is not one of those procedures that people talk about at parties, or that you’re going to discuss with a casual group of people like you would a breast augmentation or rhinoplasty surgery.

However, labiaplasty is really becoming more popular in the United States, largely due to social media and a more relaxed attitude towards plastic surgery enhancements. Every year, there are about 10,000 labiaplasties performed in the United States and that number is going up. So, labiaplasty is a thing, for lack of a better term, and it is one of those things that people are looking for information for. And the reason to make this show, in particular, is that there really is not a lot of good information out there. There’s a lot of social media stuff; not a lot of great information.

So, why I really wanted to record this episode is to give you good information about what a labiaplasty is, what it treats, and what else is out there because there are other non-surgical treatments that are out there that are kind of aimed at the same population, but not really. So, let’s start with what a labiaplasty actually is. Now, without going into great anatomic detail here, there are two main portions of the female external genitalia that we surgically manipulate. One is the labia majora, which are large and largely fatty tissue on the outside, and then the labia minora, which are on the inside—so medial or inside of the labia majora—and are right at the edge of the vagina and urethra. This is the very thin tissue that does have muscle in it that is highly sensitive and sort of shields the opening of the vagina and the urethra, as well as providing cover for the clitoris.

In labiaplasty surgery, what we’re primarily doing is altering the labia minora which is that thin tissue on the inside, which can get stretched out or enlarged, or some women are born with it enlarged. She has been recognized by Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides magazine, all sorts of industry publications, for her work in the wedding field, in makeup. She has traveled around the world to do destination weddings at places where you would definitely recognize and is a fixture up at Blackberry Farm for their wedding events. Dr. Hall: Now, you have been all over the world for work, and some of the places that we were talking about before we hit record, places like Aspen, the Yellowstone Club, the Bahamas. What’s the coolest place you’ve been for work?

Claire: It’s not really a fair question, but I could give you a top three, maybe. Yellowstone Club is amazing; Montana has my heart, but I have to say we just did an event in Aspen at Kevin Costner’s ranch out west, and it might be my favorite, simply because I thought I would run into Rip out there, from Yellowstone. I was hoping it didn’t happen, but there’s always next time. And maybe he’s going to hear this podcast, and… I don’
