Today on episode #176 of The Troubadour we are joined once again by Dallas Wayne Pryor of the Lazy Wayne Band.  Dallas was our guest on Episode #134 almost 2 years ago when that episode was release on August 22nd of 2021.

We’re going to find out what Dallas and the Lazy Wayne has been up to since then.  I’m also excited to have him on the show because The Lazy Wayne band will be taking the stage in my little hometown of Scandia, KS on Saturday July 8th for the Scandia Riverfest so I’m really looking forward to that.

I also want to remind everyone that we could really use your support on Patreon.  Since we started the patreon page we’re now up to 11 supporters and we appreciate every single one of them.  But we could really use some more help to keep our fire alive and know that more than just these eleven folks love what Carly and I are doing here.  I’m a fan of the free market and it’s going to tell us what our content is really worth.  So, it’s really up to y’all.  If you like listening to these interviews and feel like supporting us with a few bucks a month and getting some Troubadour swag to boot, consider signing up on Patreon.

But for now, let’s roll into to episode #176 of The Troubadour featuring a fellow Kansan, Dallas Wayne Pryor of The Lazy Wayne Band.

  • George Ducas - FROM THE ARCHIVES

THIS EPISODE WAS ORGINALLY RELEASED IN SEPT. OF 2019

I’ve got to be totally honest here:  I’m not always familiar with every individual artist and songwriter we have an opportunity to visit with on the podcast.  I quit touring over two years ago, and even by that time of my career as an “entertainer” had morphed into mainly playing private parties and small bars in Kansas and Nebraska when the money was right.  I wasn’t trying to stay relevant or even keep tabs on which artists were anymore…  Let’s just say I wasn’t “up” on most of the new artists in the Red Dirt or Texas Country scene.  Frankly, by that time my college days and “good times” were already WAY over.  The artists that had shaped my view of Texas Country and Red Dirt like The Great Divide, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Cooder Graw had already all broke up…Pat Green et al were still doing their thing, but their music hit me differently in my late 30’s and as a husband & father than it did when I was a 20 year old college kid.

So, when Carly told me we’d be doing an interview with George Ducas I said “Uh… OK.”  The name sounded vaguely familiar but I just couldn’t place it so I did what all normal folks do in this day and age:  I googled him and BAM!!!!

I quickly realized that this was the George Ducas that had a hit song in 1995 called “Lipstick Promises” that I clearly remember singing in the tractor while I was in high school!!!!! Holy smokes did that bring back a quick flood of memories...  When I was lucky enough to be in a tractor that had a working radio, it was cranked to a station I could barely pick up from north central KS.  I can’t remember the call letters or the frequency but it was called “The Hit Kicker” and was out of Lincoln, NE.  That station would play pretty much a constant loop of the top 25 songs on country radio at the time and you could count on songs in the top ten multiple times each day…and so, I was probably raking hay when I got my first taste of George Ducas through “Lipstick Promises”.

As I did more research on George’s career, I learned that he had been on the same label as Garth.  Well, you can do your own math to figure out who’s gonna get the most attention from the powers that be if you are on the same label as His Garthness.  So, George’s career as an artist started to simmer, BUT his career as a songwriter started gaining more steam.

Fan’s of the podcast would probably be kinda surprised to find out that George Ducas is the songwriter on several Red Dirt and Texas Country songs including Randy Rogers Band’s “Kiss Me In The Dark”, Eli Young Band’s “Always the Love Songs” AND one of my personal favorites, “Just Call Me Lonesome” that he co-wrote with Radney Foster.

George also has co-writing credit on the Garth Brooks and George Jones song “BEER RUN”.  We had a good visit over this version of the song compared to Todd Snider’s “BEER RUN” and heard some details about both songs that I don’t think ANYONE has ever heard before this interview.  It’s definitely a part of this episode you won’t want to miss.

To cut to the chase, George Ducas is back with some new music and a project called “Yellow Rose Motel” which you can check out HERE.  I usually have to hear something a couple times to know if I dig it or not….NOT ON THIS PROJECT!  I am super impressed with this stuff!  Damn good songwriting and production.  George is releasing the project in Volumes.  Three song groupings have made up Volume 1, 2, and 3 with the final 3 songs coming soon.

The first song I heard off this project is called “Eastwood”  and is simply a great song IMO.  I don’t know what else to say….  I dig the heck out of it and George’s delivery on the song.  You’ve GOT to go listen to it!  Another song which I’m really loving from the project is called “Country Badass” which is a nice shot taken at the wannabes and cracks me up.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed our interview with George and I think you’ll find it a good listen.  AND THE MUSIC!  Please check it out because I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  Check out all things George Ducas by clicking HERE!

Today is Sunday, June 4th, 2023 Carly and I are back with another new episode featuring a singer-songwriter Ryan Lindsay.

But like always, I first want to encourage you to go check out our Patreon page if you haven’t yet.  Links can be found at thetroubadourpodcast.com, but you can also just go to patreon.com and search for The Troubadour Podcast there.  Patreon is an awesome site where you can find all kinds of content creators, musicians, authors, artists, etc., who provide all types of content and entertainment for their fans, an easy way to support what they do.  So go check it out!

Today’s guest, Ryan Lindsay, has had great success as a songwriter and storyteller having won several Country Music Alberta awards as well as having been a nominee for a Canadian Country Music Association award.

Along with being a musician, Ryan is also a genuine outdoorsman having worked as a backcountry guide and growing up on the prairies of Canada.

Due to extenuating circumstances…or put another way, due to my eldest son getting involved in a little scrap after school on the day this episode was recorded, I had to text Carly and let her know I was dealing with that little situation and she’d have to fly solo on this interview with Ryan.  Which really is a bummer because I was excited to talk to Ryan about hunting, fishing and other outdoorsy things, along with his music of course…In any event, my son was dealt with, Carly pulled off the episode on her own, and here we are!  So along with you, I’ll be listening to this episode for the first time as well!

Here comes Episode #175 of The Troubadour featuring our very own Carly Evan’s visit with country singer and songwriter Ryan Lindsay.

  • Ray Wylie Hubbard Interview

ARCHIVED EPISODE ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN MAY OF 2020!

Today’s episode features a true Texas Songwriting Legend: Ray Wylie Hubbard.

For those who follow Texas and Red Dirt Music you are almost certainly familiar with Ray.  He’s a legend in the scene and tons of artists have covered his material.  Many artists look at their chance just to co-write with Ray as a pinnacle in their careers.

Known for his bar-room sing-along anthem, Red Neck Mother, Ray started gaining notoriety in the 70’s when Jerry Jeff Walker made the tune a main-stay for dark, smoky honky-tonks.  Then, over the years he also became known for penning other great signature songs like “Snake Farm”, recorded by podcast alum Paul Thorn, as well as “I Wanna Rock n Roll” recorded by Red Dirt legends in their own right, Cross Canadian Ragweed.

One of my favorite songs that pays homage to Ray is the song “Good One Comin On” recorded by Blackberry Smoke and Trent Wilmon, and written by David Lee Murphy, Gary Nicholson, and Lee Roy Parnell.

We get into Ray’s backstory in the episode and he takes us all the way from his start during the Cowboy/Hippie movement in Austin revolving around the Armidillo World Headquarters, us to his most recent projects featuring performances with names like Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Don Was, Chris Robinson and Ashley McBryde.

If you haven’t checked out the YouTube video of the song “Bad Trick” here’s the LINK.

I know Carly and I were both honored to have this chance to interview Ray.

So here we go with episode #80 of The Troubadour featuring our conversation with Ray Wylie Hubbard.

All of Ray’s social media links, music and merch can be explored by going to his website at www.raywylie.com

Back in March of 2021 Carly and I released Episode #112 of The Troubadour featuring a western swing band that I knew had a boatload of talent.  The interview featured Ryan Humbert and Emily Bates of the Ohio based band named The Shootouts.  At the time they were promoting their latest record entitled “Bullseye” produced by Chuck Mead.

Well, since that time they’ve been grinding it out on the road and have cut another record called “Stampede” with Ray Benson and Sam Seifert co-producing.  “Stampede” features guest performances by Ray, Asleep at the Wheel,  Jim Lauderdale, Marty Stuart, Raul Malo and Buddy Miller.  Not exactly a bunch of light-weights!

Today we’re catching up with Shootouts frontman Ryan Humbert to hear all about the new record and their debut performance at The Grand Ole Opry on February 24th, 2023 which just also happened to be the day “Stampede” was released.

There’re some great conversation in this episode that you won’t want to miss so let’s get to it!  Here comes Episode #174 of The Troubadour and our visit with Ryan Humbert, frontman of the red hot western swing band, The Shootouts.

  • Ned LeDoux

THIS EPISODE WAS ORGINALLY RELEASED IN AUGUST OF 2020!

Carly and I were super-excited to finally get a chance to get Ned on the podcast.

As you can tell, Ned has a lot of his father in him and we only think there are great things to come for this young troubadour.

So here comes episode #88 of The Troubadour featuring Wyoming native and Kansas transplant, Ned Ledoux.

Today’s guest is a country artist that calls New Mexico home.  He’s got a killer baritone voice and you can just tell he’s the real deal.  Will Banister was immersed in the music of Merle Haggard, Hank and George Strait at a young age and you can really hear those influences in his music.  His popularity on Tik-Tok, Instagram and Facebook has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years in response to his no fluff, off the cuff and honest posts.

Along with touring here he's toured Europe to great accolades and he’s even had a song in a Clint Eastwood movie.  He’s a very humble down to earth guy when you’re speaking to him, but when he gets on stage or in a studio his talent speaks for itself.

For our Oklahoma listeners Will’s gonna be playing at Chiggers in Broken Bow on Saturday, May 6th and he’s got a bunch of dates scheduled in Texas including one at Cheatham Street Warehouse on Friday, May 19th.  All his tour date and everything else Will Banister can be found by visiting willbanister.com.  Links for this and much more will be found in the show notes for this episode.

So let’s get to it!  Here comes Episode #173 of The Troubadour and our visit with a true country artist.  Mr. Will Banister.

  • Austin Meade - Texas-Americana Music Rock and Roller

ARCHIVED EPISODE - ORIGINALLY RELEASED ON APRIL 21, 2019

At the ripe old age of twenty-six, Texas and Americana Music Rock and Roller, Austin Meade, is carving out his own niche in the independent music scene.

Austin's latest record, "Waves" has all the vibe, feel and look of 1970s, all the way down to the look of the front-man.

Despite his relatively young age, Austin has four records under his belt and is quickly solidifying himself as an authentic artist that's here to stay.

In this interview we learn how Austin's father, a Baptist preacher, was a fan of some 70's greats including Styx and .38 Special which bled over into Austin's taste in music and is partially responsible for the direction he's taken with his own music.

While attending college in College Station, Texas, Austin was introduced to Texas Country and Red Dirt Music along with the artists making up the genre.  For a love of music, drums and guitar, Austin soon found himself trying to subtly introduce himself to folks like William Clark Green, Randy Rogers and Cross Canadian Ragweed frontman, Cody Canada.

By developing these relationships with these type of artists, Austin has gained the respect of many of his peers in the music business; so much so that Austin now teaches guitar for Cody Canada at the local School of Rock for youngsters.

We expect to see great things in the future out of this genuine, hard-working rocker.

  • MONTE MONTGOMERY INTERVIEW

Today is Sunday, April 16th, 2023 and I’m probably more excited about releasing this episode than almost any other I’ve ever been able to record up to this point in my journey as a podcaster.

This episode marks a full-circle moment in my life of music so indulge me for just a second while I take you down memory lane a bit.  On July 4th, 1999 I was a twenty year-old wannabe musician.  Several college friends and I had made the trek from North Central Kansas all the way to Luckenbach, TX for Willie Nelson’s 4th of July picnic.

That day I got to see many well-known and legendary musicians, and most of them for the first time in my life.

But about 4pm on that hot hill-country Texas day, an absolute freak of a guitar player took the stage.  What I witnessed over the next 20 minutes or so left me with my mouth gaping wide open.  That was the first time I’d even heard the name Monte Montgomery, but I knew what I was witnessing was other-worldly; it was almost like seeing something from a different dimension.  What Monte could do on an acoustic guitar seemed unhuman.  His ability was incredible but the sounds he could get out of that guitar we’re unlike any I’ve ever heard.  I’ve been a big fan of Monte’s ever since then and today, nearly 25 years after seeing him play that first time, Monte Montgomery is our guest today on The Troubadour.

As you’ll hear in the interview, Monte has an interesting backstory from picking up a guitar for the first time when he was about 13 years old, to now, being known throughout the world as one of the best acoustic guitar players alive today.  Guitar Player Magazine named him as one their “Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitar Players” and he can often be seen sharing a stage with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel or playing All-Star Guitar Player showcases at NAMM.  Fact is, he’ll be playing on May 5th at the Dallas International Guitar Festival.  He can often be seen at the legendary Saxon Pub in Austin and for our Oklahoma listeners, Monte will be doing a two night stand at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City on May 12th and 13th.

Links for everything and some embedded YouTube videos of Monte shredding his Alvarez can be found in the show notes for this episode at thetroubadourpodcast.com

And also, if you can find it in your heart to throw Carly and I a bone, we would love to have you sign up as a supporter on our Patreon page so we can continue to bring you interviews with these great artists like Monte.  You can sign up for as little as $3.00 per month and we’ll even send you some podcast swag for doing so  So take action now and go check the “Support The Podcast” tab at thetroubadourpodcast.com.

So let’s get into it!  Here comes Episode #172 of The Troubadour and our visit with one of the greatest guitar players to ever live, Monte Montgomery.

We’re also excited to say that we are now an affiliate for Sweetwater.  So, the next time you need any new strings, picks, microphones, recording gear, etc. make sure to use this link!

Today is Sunday, April 2nd, 2023 and on this episode Carly and I are stoked to bring you our recent visit with a great artist and songwriter from Manitoba, Canada named Del Barber.  If you are already into other Canadian artists like Corb Lund and Colter Wall, you’ll probably want to add Del to the list of highly talented singer-songwriters from up north.

But first, I’d be remis if I didn’t remind you that the #1 way you can support our podcast and keep hearing interviews with these artists and songwriters is by becoming a patron at our Patreon Page and it’s super easy to do.  Just pick one of the 5 tier packages, starting at as little as $3.00 per month and we’ll send you some free podcast swag.  Currently, we’ve only got 8 patrons that have taken advantage of this, but I know there’s a ton more listeners that would be glad to help, if they only knew how.  Well, Patreon seems to be about the easiest avenue we’ve found for folks that want to support the show to do so.

Go check out the link by clicking the “Support The Podcast” tab at thetroubadourpodcast.com.

Finding out about the music of Del Barber was really like a breath of fresh air for me.  Del is a “songwriter’s songwriter” and one quickly understands why he gets compared to guys like John Prine and has been featured in Rolling Stone.

He’s a very down to earth dude that lives in rural Canada about 4 hours from an airport and when he’s not writing songs on his farm, he’s enjoying the quiet remoteness of the land.  As you’ll hear he’s an introspective guy, as most songwriters are, for me it was kinda like talking to an ol buddy I hadn’t seen in years.

His new album, “Almanac” will come out on April 28th and he and his band are getting ready to hit the road to showcase the new tunes.  The tour starts this coming Tuesday, April 4th and they’ll be all over the provinces of Canada grinding it out until mid-May.  And for you Texas listeners, Del will be at the Mucky Duck in Houston on May 26th.  He’ll be adding more stateside dates before long so make sure you check out his schedule at delbarber.com and pre-order your copy of “Almanac” while your there.

Links for everything can be found in the show notes for this episode at thetroubadourpodcast.com

So let’s get into it!  Here comes Episode #171 of The Troubadour and our visit with Canadian singer-songwriter, and potentially my new deer hunting buddy, Del Barber
