  • Jean Claude Romand: The Man in the Parking Lot

For eighteen years, Jean-Claude Romand told everyone he was a doctor and researcher at the World Health Organization. He wasn't. He had no job and no medical degree and when the lie finally began to collapse, he murdered his entire family. This documentary unravels one of the most disturbing true crime cases in modern French history. Jean-Claude Romand built an entire life on a single lie: a prestigious medical career, a comfortable home, and the complete trust of his wife, his children, his parents and his friends. In reality, he had never qualified as a doctor. He spent his days sitting alone in car parks and motorway lay-bys, driving to nowhere, funding his double life by defrauding the very people who loved him most. In January 1993, as the fraud closed in on him, Romand killed his wife Florence, their two young children, and his parents, before attempting to take his own life. He survived and stood trial for the murders that ended a deception nearly two decades in the making. How does a man sustain a lie for eighteen years? How does an ordinary, respected family man become capable of annihilating everyone closest to him? We trace the full story: the first small deception in medical school, the years of quiet fraud, the unravelling, the investigation, the trial, and the unsettling questions this case still raises today. In this documentary: The full timeline of Jean-Claude Romand's eighteen-year deception. How he faked a career at the WHO and fooled everyone around him. The financial fraud that funded his invented life .The events of January 1993 and the collapse of the lie. The investigation, the trial, and the aftermath. What the case reveals about deception, denial and the human capacity for self-delusion.
