This week, avid runner, writer, and poet, Brent Manke joins the show and handles his honourary Idiot role with ease! I'll let you decide if that's a compliment or insult, but either way, Brent joins the show to tell us about his upcoming fundraising event called The Longest Night Run, and how it started in support of a friend battling cancer and has continued as a way for others to band together to battle their own darkness while running a relay around Steinbach on Dec 21st -- the longest night of the year -- all in support of Eden Health. We go on to chat about his writing projects, connecting with nature, mental health, changing perspectives and Paying Attention™, haikus (including haibuns, @runhaiku, and everything in between), favourite poets (hint: it's not Shel Silverstein), podcasts, The Green Book and other books, and so much more! Enjoy!

What better way to commemorate Remembrance Day than to spend an episode discussing Canadian heroes, Canadian veterans, and the good, the bad, and the ugly of Canadian-focused military history? Joining us this week is historian and creator of 'On This Day in Canadian Military History' (go follow him), Brad St Croix! He spends his time making sure we don't forget the heroic people that fought and died for our country and we have a heartfelt chat about what Remembrance Day means to him, Juno Beach stories (his great uncle landed there on D-Day), little known (but fascinating) Canadian involvement in the Vietnam War, the American Civil War, a deep dive on the Second World War's Battle of Hong Kong, acknowledging Canadian military excellence, a few Canadian military factoids, how our perception as "peace keepers" is a myth, Canada's Caribbean province, embracing nuance, and so much more!

We're joined this week by longtime fan of the show, Brian Moore, and honestly, I'm not sure how to describe this episode. We bumble our way through multiple technical issues with headphone problems, accidental mutes, etc, we chat about movies Reg has never heard of, saran wrap, religious exemptions for Covid, slurpees and pastoral degrees, we argue about Roman history and the legacy of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus and his son Sextus, Randy joins in partway through and we do a bunch of Would You Rather's and Rapid Fire questions, favourite terrible movies, Ted Lasso, and a bunch of other random stuff. This one's a whole lot of weird and we hope you enjoy!

Heather McBriarty joins the show this week to tell us how her family discovered nearly 70 letters written by a mysterious Canadian First World War soldier, from 1914-16, named James W Johnstone to her grandma Isobel (who Jim affectionately called "Chiquita") and how she compiled those letters into a book, called 'Somewhere in Flanders'. Through the letters written to his sweetheart back in Canada, Jim (with Heather's help) tells, firsthand, the story of his training in Quebec and England, his journey as a part of the biggest military force to every cross the Atlantic ocean, trench warfare and battles in France and Belgium, surviving the Battle of Ypres and his time in military hospitals, some sense of the horrors around him, and so much more. We chat about how Jim would write letters with shells exploding all around, criticizing his own spelling and penmanship the entire time, how utterly likeable he is and how sweet his letters are despite his circumstances, the impacts of the war on families, the meaning of Remembrance Day, stories of the rowdy Canadian troops - hooligans, heroes, and hockey - and more! It was a pleasure reading Heather's book and an even greater pleasure getting to discuss it with her, so we hope you enjoy!
