Meade not long ago that revealed their earlier foray into the Monroe Institute's technique of binaural beats auditory stimulation to reliably create out of body experiments, travel forward and back in time, and contact with non-human entities, which the Army report confirms based upon experiences of their platoons of intelligence officers trained in such. It reveals the common technique of advanced spiritual practices to put the discerning left brain lobe to sleep, and casually dismisses the supernatural dangers they admit it creates. This episode reviews another short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne that may be more disturbing than the previously-reviewed "Young Goodman Brown," at least to a spiritual-minded person. "The Minister's Black Veil" recounts the reaction a pious Puritan community has to the sudden and unexplained appearance of a "black veil" covering their parson's face one Sunday, and thereafter. The reactions of all parties to its sinister effect reveal their inner thoughts and guilt, group think, paranoia and repressed secrets, and the gravity of lives and communities lived behind veils. This episode explores a 14-page 1835 short story by the author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne - a story which author Stephen King described as "one of the ten best stories written by an American." This chilling story, which can still keep people today awake at night, through its narrative of deep occult doings in a sleepy "Christian" town, reveals a loss of spiritual innocence and trust in community and its religious institutions and leadership. Dr. Bennett summarizes the cogent elements of this tale, and how he and possibly many others now relate to the spiritual alienation Goodman Brown felt, now from the modern, "righteous" Bible Belt spiritual culture of their upbringing, as they similarly "pull back the veil" on the true nature of their beloved religious institutions and peers. After pointing out key details of the events, it ruminates on its relevance to people of faith today, and whether they will believe the "minority report" of "two spies" to enter a secular culture with faith in God for flourishing, or the "ten spies" and the mass media murmurers based upon paranoia, alarmism and ultimate lack of faith in God's reliability, as a theme for the current blog, radio show and podcast forward.
