I really appreciate Amar being so open and raw about her life and perspective on the disability space. From opening up about past experiences of abuse to the vulnerability many of us face with disability intimacy to how our community can find resources on sexual health I feel Amar has a very in tune perspective!

Today I talk with Mr. Cool Beans about his life story which does include creation of the second coffee flavored podcast (clearly I missed my opportunity to incorporate coffee into the title of this show 😅). He shares his ongoing journey with CKD or chronic kidney disease and challenges like travel for a bevy of appointments on a regular basis.

Mr. Cool Beans brings up a great point during the conversation about revisiting joyful and honestly nostalgic periods of life when living with chronic health situations. In his case that currently involves a return to the world of Pokemon card collections. I know for a fact that others (me!) go to similar lighthearted activities to escape reality at times!

The chronic illness community has an amazing ability to adapt especially with the help of our family and friends with us along the way. I loved learning about Jennifer’s family support system and how it has evolved!

This week I talk with Maddy Ullman who is a disabled film consultant, advocate, and storyteller! She shares her journey so far which includes living with Cerebral Palsy and Type 1 Diabetes as a self defined “disability cocktail”.

Maddy also talks about her work with Disney as a disability consultant for the movie “Wish” in which there is an Asian American character with a mobility aide. This led us into the progress that film inclusion efforts have made and the continued shortcomings of the field.

Mandie Kijinski (@AmandaRKijinski) talks about her podcast, the Powers at Play, on this episode and the diversity of guests who join her for real conversations. I really respect her approach to interviewing people who don’t share some of her views while maintaining empathy.

One point that I find especially important from talking with Mandie regarding disability is how we all know someone who has a disability and/or chronic illness. Basically, we don’t have to look far to find people who have disabilities of some type (often beyond physical). It’s possible to treat one as humans first above any other label!
