Uni High was built on the land that was once part of an Indigenous village. It's not something I thought about when I was in school, but I think about it now. We used to be Warrior before the district banned all Native American mascots. Today I found out in the book The First Angelinos: The Gabrielino Indians of Los Angeles by William McCawley that the lineages of Gabrielinos in this area were part of two separate groups: the coyotes and the wildcats. When the school school selected its new mascot, the Wildcats, they had no idea that this too was a reflection of the people who first lived here.
