On #TheUpdate this Friday, as authorities continue to investigate a crane collapse that rained thousands of pounds of steel debris onto a busy Manhattan street, the owner and operator of the failed crane are facing scrutiny over past safety failures. Some of the companies that formed what is now Citigroup likely benefitted financially from slavery in the 1800’s, the financial giant acknowledged Thursday, an admission that comes at a time when numerous institutions are re-examining their historic roots and the roles they played in slavery in the U.S. And July has been so hot so far that scientists calculate that this month will be the globally hottest on record and likely the warmest human civilization has seen, even though there are several days left to sweat through. 🌡️🔥

On #TheUpdate this Thursday, Mayor Adams says nine civilians suffered minor injuries but no one died when a fire on a construction crane caused its arm to strike a building as it crashed to the street. The trainer of racehorse champion Maximum Security has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a widespread international scheme to drug horses to make them race faster. And a system of ocean currents that transports heat northward across the North Atlantic could collapse this century, according to a new study. 🔥🌊🌡️

On #TheUpdate this Tuesday, Emergency call center workers say their centers are understaffed, struggling to fill vacancies and plagued by worker burnout. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says ground beef contaminated with salmonella has sickened at least 16 people in four Northeastern states. And The U.S. Department of Education has opened an investigation into Harvard University’s policies on legacy admissions, which give an edge to applicants with family ties to alumni. 🏫🕵️

Ned Lamont on Monday ordered an independent investigation into the state police after an audit last month that showed troopers falsified information on at least 26,000 traffic stops from 2014 to 2021. You don't know their names but you might recognize their faces. Hollywood's “journeyman” actors tend to work for scale pay, and spend at least as much time lining up work as working. And they're the ones — not the big Hollywood names — who are at the heart of the current strike. And the death of an older Arizona woman when her electricity was cut during a heat spell five years ago spurred changes in shutoff rules. On #TheUpdate this Monday, As police comb through the home of a man charged in a string of serial killings in New York, one witness is frustrated it took so long to solve the crime. New Jersey has filed a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping New York’s plan to charge big tolls to drive into the most visited parts of Manhattan. And a woman was found dead in Montana on Saturday after coming into contact with a grizzly bear on a trail west of Yellowstone National Park. 🧏‍♀️🐻
