The USL Show

Austin da Luz (North Carolina FC captain) and our Evan Villella (The USL Show, Views from the Bridge) sit down and open up a Playing for Pride/BGN FM LGBTQ+ Pride Month series with Austin getting to know all about how Evan came to find acceptance and peace through his coming out process through soccer. This is part one of a four part series that will see Evan sit down with some other LGBTQ+ soccer supporters from all over the United States for some insight on their experience with being gay and loving soccer. Go check out playing for pride on Twitter or give Austin a shout to find out how you can get involved and to see the tremendous outpouring of support from soccer players at every level of the game in the United States (and some abroad!)

Listener questions, Open Cup talk, and a few game reviews

The USL gets into the game of suing in soccer, we have USL players in the Gold Cup, we debate Mike Pendleton’s #SoccerWarz tweet, and cover some games. Is Tampa Bay legit? Preseason bragging rights. Let’s go.

This episode is devoted almost entirely to the potential new concussion sub in the USL and US Open Cup round 4. Jason Weintraub of League 1 Fun joins us to give us an idea what to expect from League 1 competition.

The guys return after a much needed break. We make up some time on news of USL past and present and share stories of recent life changes, but spend most of the show debating who are the most under and overachieving teams–and why.

The guys burn through this week’s games wondering which surprising team will become risers or fallers, we rightly predict a yellow card retraction, and generally fill an hour with American tier 2 soccer talk.

Evan, Ryan and Pony are joined by David from BGN’s New Mexico United podcast, The Cursecast, to break down week 5 in USL, talk some stadium news and bring up Hartfords historically bad start. Theres also your standard dose of shenanigans so stick around for that too!

The bulk of this show debates whether one time MLS bulk loans to the USL is problematic to fans, other clubs, and the league itself. Thanks to Carson Merk of BGN Written for joining us to share the perspectives he outlined in his article on the topic.

The guys hash out week 3 along with some talk about attendance, international players, printed tifos, League 1 premiere and more.
