I have always equated the success of the plant based alternatives market with the success of the vegan cause. If more tasty products come replacing meat, dairy and egg, than veganism is winning. Or is it? Today's guest, Miyoko Schinner, vegan icon and successful entrepreneur, made me think twice about that assumption. From food colonialism to cultivated meat, our conversation was a deep dive into the disconcerting world of the food industry.

It is said that "money is the nerve of war", and in the war of making a better world for animals, the same rule applies. The only reason why professional vegan nonprofits, such as Mercy for Animals, PETA, the Paul Watson Foundation or SASHA Farm, exist and thrive is because of money. And that money does not grow on trees: it is the result of extensive fundraising efforts.

And for today's episode, my wish is for vegan organizations, both big and small, to become champions of fundraising. To help us achieve this goal, I am thrilled to welcome Marina Boulos-Winton, a rockstar in the philanthropic world, who has graciously agreed to share with us the secrets behind her success.

Marina is currently the Executive Director of YES Employment + Entrepreneurship. She previously served for ten years as the executive director of Chez Doris, a day shelter for women in difficulty. Prior to this, she held the position of President & CEO at the Foundation of Greater Montreal. Her professional journey also includes serving as the Acting Executive Director of the High-Water Women Foundation, as President and CEO of the national “I Have a Dream Foundation®,” as Assistant National Executive Director of the YWCA, as well as senior executive positions with the national fundraising consulting firm, CCS Fundraising Inc., and with the United Way of New York City.

There is a strong, impactful and clear Christian argument for veganism, and my hope was for Christspiracy to successfully make that argument to the Christian community. But I discovered that this is not what the documentary is about. What I watched was a patchwork of extraordinary claims that deserved some review.

If you are vegan, let me remind you of how amazing that is. What you have done is breaking free from 16 000 years of conditioning that makes us humans see other animals as mere objects of exploitation. And by doing so, your world has grown livelier, more exciting and kinder. Above all else, what I admire the most in my fellow vegans is that independent mindedness, that capacity to think and feel against the strong winds of normalized animal exploitation.

And this is what today's episode is about: staying faithful to that independence of mind. To avoid the trappings of mob mentality and tribalism. Even when that push to conform and abandon critical thinking comes from within the vegan community.

Today, we address the free speech threats animal rights rights activists face everyday, from social media censorship and reputational harm to detention. We will explore the risks of talking for animals in a world where animal exploitation is the norm.

To discuss this topic, I have with me Dr. Faraz Harsini and Madeline Krasno, two targets of free speech attacks.

Dr. Faraz is the Founder and CEO of Allied Scholars for Animal Protection (ASAP), a non-profit which mentors and supports animal advocates. He is also a Cultivated Meat Bioprocessing Senior Scientist at the Good Food Institute.

Madeline is a returning guest of the show! She is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Justify, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing science without human or animal suffering. Justify provides a supportive space for current and former lab workers to share their stories and aims to shine a light on the realities of animal research.
