There are maybe hundreds if not thousands of vegan outreach initiatives out there. But among them, there are relatively very few seeking to open dialogue with religious leaders. Yet, strategically, I believe it is more valuable to share the vegan message of compassion with religious leaders than school children, college kids or random people in the streets, since those religious leaders will influence the hearts and minds of believers for decades to come.

For this week's episode, I want to turn my attention to Buddhism, The fourth most practiced religion with approximately 500 million followers worldwide. To give you an idea of how big this number is, think that the global vegan population, this is you and me listener, is of approximately 79 million people. Imagine what the world would look like if those 500 million Buddhists considered adopting veganism?

Back in 2003, the highest grossing movie was Finding Nemo, and that year Finding Nemo was competing with Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix Reloaded and the third Lord of the Rings movie. And it is understandable: the Pixar animation work is genius. The characters are funny and touching at times.The storyline is thoughtful and speaks to a wide audience.

But what really compels me about the story of Finding Nemo is its animal rights dimension. For the first time ever, we had a movie depicting fish and other sea life as individual sentient creatures. Of course, they were anthropomorphized to a certain degree, but still, for once they were represented as more than food.

More than that, the whole plot of the movie revolved around an act of animal abuse. The capture and captivity of Nemo in an aquarium. The habit humans have of turning marine life into decoration. And this is the topic of today's episode. And to discuss this issue, I have with me Gwendolyn Church, the founder of Friends of Phillip, a fish and aquatic animal sanctuary based in Reno, Nevada in the United States.

About 7 years ago, one of my all time favorite ASMR artists, WhispersRed, also known as Emma, posted a video called "ASMR Dog Spa and Massage". And then 4 years ago, a video called "ASMR Veterinary Checkup". And in both of these videos, she's caring for a dog in a fantasy place called Whispaws.

So imagine my confusion and surprise when in 2021 she announced that Whispaws was now a real place, a sanctuary for dogs located in Serbia. I was so happy to learn the news and it just increased my admiration for WhispersRed, whose love for animals shines brightly through her work.

Queen Elizabeth II reigned over the United Kingdoms and the Commonwealth for 70 years, making her the second longest reigning monarch in history. She is remembered for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service, which made her a beloved and respected figure worldwide.

However her legacy is not all good as she is also remembered as being a passionate supporter of horse racing, thus contributing more than anyone else to giving a cover of prestige to a horrific industry.

In footage provided by The Telegraph years ago, she is seen visiting her stables and saying something quite peculiar at the sight of one of her horses: "I often wonder what goes through her head."

Terrorism, violent, criminal, extremist, radical, illegal. Those are the kinds of words attached to the Animal Liberation Front, a global anarchist movement fighting for animal liberation.

Why do you think animal rights and the vegan cause are not more appealing to a conservative audience? Would you attribute it to a failure of activists to advocate for animal rights in conservative circles? I don't really have an answer for you about conservatives being particularly problematic, other than to say a lot of socially conservative folks live in smaller communities more closely attached to animal agriculture. There is also the fundamentalist Christianity connection and the unwillingness to question ideology. That said, we used to get a lot of favorable coverage by Fox News, although they haven't expressed much interest of late.

Basically the idea behind it is that you don't need lots of resources or space to provide sanctuary to animals who would have otherwise been mercilessly used as commodities.

"In Australia and other countries, mink lashes have become popular. Their mink fur, that's been shaved off a mink's body, that are then glued in strains to a human's eyelashes for a fuller and thicker look. Mink lashes are often sold as 100% cruelty-free or safely collected from a free-range farm or even taken only after the minks have been brushed. Minks are the most commonly farmed fur-bearing animals in the world."

Do you believe it is ethically acceptable to purchase mink fur at a second hand store? The issue of wearing second hand fur is that it promotes real fur fashion. Wearing real fur in public may encourage someone to buy a brand-new real fur clothing item. Wearing any item made from the death of an animal is also speciesist. Give that fur coat the proper burial it deserves.

In addition, some retailers that are targeted by anti fur campaigns have tried stating they want to used recycled fur. But there is often no third party verification process that traces where the fur is coming from. It is used by retailers as an attempt to circumvent initiating a fur free policy.
