This Week: Live from Carlsbad Grand Prix!

Velo Worthy Podcast goes on location to cover all the racing and festivities for the Carlsbad Grand Prix. We start off talking to Megan Jastrab who is the future of women’s cycling. At the age of fourteen she is already a national champion and in this race she cleaned up every prime in the women’s 3/4 race and won the race as well. She also raced the pro women’s race and got second by a nose! Her goal is to go the Olympics in 2020 and go pro at cycling. You heard her here first! Next we talk with Ryan Dahl of Monster Media racing and winner of the masters 35+ race. A mountain biker and California state cyclocross champ, he beat every crit specialist (myself included) to find the winning move for this race. Next up is Seth Davidson. Racer of 45+ race, Big Orange racer, Bike Lawyer and financier in the form of many cash primes through many races of southern California. He talks about the need for growth in racing and competitive cycling. Seth explains the paradox of people who track every metric on power and Strava and then claim to not be competitive. Seth is the advocate for all cyclists competitive and non competitive alike. John Abate is commentating on the action in the mens Pro 1/2 from the course. No one else at the race has a better perspective than him. He talks about the action, the primes, breaks and of course the win. Josh Alverson, of the Surf City Cyclery Team, the eventual winner catches his breath to talk to us about winning the race and how the breakaway of three survived a hard charging group of some of the best criterium riders in the country. Co hosting duties continue when John Abate provides his insight into the days events thus far. Legend and 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Steve Hegg, sits down to put in his thoughts on the racing action and even compares todays fast men with some of the folks he bumped elbows with when he was racing for the LA Sheriff squad. We also speak with Jess Cerra of who is still rehabilitating from her injuries. She provides insight into the women’s race and speaks about what she’s been up to since we last spoke. Lastly we talk with eventual race winner Denise Mueller and how she out kicked her competition to win and retire from bike racing. She will also be attempting to set the land speed record on the bike previously set by her mentor John Howard. This podcast is a must listen if you love cycling!

You would think that someone that helps direct America’s longest bike race Race Across America or RAAM, they would be a weathered, salty stuffy race director. Amanda Knutson is anything but. She is pleasant, personable and guest on episode 13 of the podcast. She talks about some of the logistics it takes to run that kind of event. She also talks about how she got her start in the sport in a crazy event called RAGBRAI. She was a spectator since she was a child and then got on the bike and hasn’t stopped riding. She calls Boulder Colorado her home yet seems to be globetrotting quite a bit. Her mind works as basically one big problem solver. She helps coordinate logistics, covers scheduling, social media, local volunteers, support and everything else it takes to help run a race of this magnitude. Amanda is also a great bike racer in her own right excelling in gravel and endurance rides. Recently she finished 8th at BWR and hopes to improve on that next year. At 26 she is has a big future in the sport and is helping bring more attention to RAAM and anything else she puts her mind to. Please listen to this fun and interesting episode! Jess Cerra joins us for this weeks episode of the podcast. She is the co-creator/owner of formerly known, Harmony Bar, and pro cyclist. After some time being a personal trainer, she moved to southern California and became interested in cycling from seeing all the cyclists down by the beach. A friend of hers helped get her into the cycling game, and she soon decided she wanted to do Xterra. She soon began doing triathlons and ended up in the world championships. The CBR was her first crit, but she soon tried road racing and learned she very much enjoyed it. She was also friends with Janel Holcomb who was known to race with her. Later on, she went through two iliac artery surgeries after having troubles in her right leg when running, which resulted in a rough season afterwards. She then goes on to discuss her most recent crash that happened in her latest race at Tour of the Gila. After having to have surgery on her wrist, she had a very long recovery process ahead of her. Though she did miss out on Tour of California, seeing her team do so well she stated helped her through the toughest part of recovery. Though going through all this, she has big plans for the future, and a few changes coming for her energy bar company which she is excited about. Jess is someone who is extremely determined and optimistic about her future. She has had a multitude of resources available to her to reach her potential. Her injuries are severe yet her optimism and her network of friends and family are helping her throughout her recovery process. You don’t want to miss this inspiring episode!

In today’s episode, we talked with race coach Adam Mills. Starting off his athletic hobby with soccer, he began racing as junior while going to KU. While in college he did his best to work through the ranks, as he slowly began his cycling career. Eventually becoming a cycling coach, we discussed his coaching technique, goal based coaching, and some of the people he has coached including, Joseph Shals, Michael Bolman, and Whitney Alison. He gives credit to Chris Lotts, the man behind the CBR races and the value that those races have in SoCal. He also touches on some of the techniques of rubbing and bumping of crits in the peloton. Then going on to discuss his not being part of a team, while co-managing the Elevate cycling team, as well as the pros and cons to not being part of a racing team. He speaks of how he enjoys being a freelancer so, but would enjoy teammates, especially when racing against bigger teams such as Monster Media and Surf City. If you’ve ever contemplated getting a coach, he sheds light on the cost/benefits and you can see if it is right for you.

You cannot have Southern California Cycling without talking with Michael Marckx.

Former CEO and owner/creator of the widely known BWR, Michael Marckx, is the guest of Episode 10 of the Velo Worthy Podcast. Starting off with just marathons, and making his way to triathlons, Michael was already setting himself up for becoming the huge influence he is now in the cycling and athletic world. While being friend’s with Lance Armstrong, and a drummer in a band, he continued on the athletic path by becoming a runner. After suffering a leg injury, he chose bike riding as a means of recovery, and from there, cycling became more present in his life. When he was hired by Spy, as CEO, he helped to completely turn the company around, creating a better work ethic and environment while helping the company to become better than it ever was before. During this he goes on to create the BWR, what could possibly be the most popular race in The United States. Being inspired by Belgium and France, he took the aspects of romance and challenge to create this race. His also behind the team Monster Media, which is growing to be one of the largest cycling teams in Southern California with Chapters all over the country. He then goes on to talk about his plans for the future, including mentoring college students at CSU about business, and participating in RAW (Race Across the West). Tonight we welcome Janel Holcomb to the Velo Worthy Podcast. She talks about her start into the sport which is a very unconventional one with Team in Training. She started from the very bottom of the sport and has quickly climbed to the highest levels. She has raced as a professional both domestic and abroad and won just about every race there is. She speaks about her first contract with Webcor and reflects on her days racing as a pro and looks into the state of women’s cycling. Janel looks into some of the disparity between mens and women’s professional cycling and some of the many ways that a young person today can make at the highest levels of cycling. Janel devotes her time to riding, coaching and running an offseason camp in Borrego Springs. She was an absolute pleasure to talk with and someone who has seen a large part of the sport and bring such a unique perspective into the podcast. This episode is one you do not want to miss!

Cycling industry entrepreneur Ryan Cady joins us for episode 8 of the podcast and takes a break from his increasingly busy schedule. A midwest transplant in his youth, he hit the books at UCSD where he really got into cycling, raced for the school and his cycling took off from there. While in college he worked and managed a shop while trying to balance his cycling life. While he was at the tipping point between cycling and a “real” job he worked at Sock Guy and eventually took over the company and was with it for ten years. After sock guy, it gave him options. Options to travel, be with family and fit in riding. He has always been enamored with style and clothing and it was then that he came up with Eliel Cycling clothing. A company based out of Southern California and now a staple in the cycling community. It’s a project he was successful with taking his business acumen from other areas in the industry and channeling it into this brand which is synonymous with quality and style. Fred is the President of one of the largest and oldest cycling clubs in Southern California. Swamis Cycling has had a great history of producing not only great cyclists but has reached out into other aspects of cycling such as bike advocacy, reaching out to more cyclists of ability levels and has a large presence on group rides and activities. Swamis also has the event Carlsbad Grand Prix which is in its fourth year and part of the SoCal cup series. In the show he talks about what it’s like to run and be a part of one of the biggest cycling organizations around and how he got his start in both the sport and club. Often times a demanding and thankless volunteer job we discuss some of the challenges involved and how the team has evolved past its racing roots. We also discuss the finite piece of road on the coast that both cyclists and drivers enjoy simultaneously and how everyone can learn to share the road. The world famous Swamis ride and the future for this SoCal institution!

Tim Jackson sits down and joins us for the next episode because he is a cycling and industry sage. He has been involved in cycling longer than most people have been alive. Even though he is not originally from Southern California, he has called it home long enough to see the scene evolve over many years. In addition to his cycling industry exploits, he is quite the talented rider with a lot of years under his belt on the road and track and just about every other surface except maybe ice. He has some great thoughts about what separates southern California from other parts of the world in terms of its cycling and why traditional crit racing is being overshadowed by rides like the Belgian Waffle Ride. He talks about what it’s like to be hit by cars while riding and breaking bones as well as how he has recovered and how the industry is giving back to him. Also if being in the cycling industry and being a dad to two kids wasn’t hard enough, he decides to drop more than fifty pounds. The good news is we get to find out how all of this happened.
