The VGMbassy episodes

  • Episode 14: Flip the Core with Dya
Today’s VGM was selected by Patreon rewards member Cam Werme! Ed and special guest VGMbassador Aaron Hickman, AKA chiptuner Dya, listen to the music from the game “Flip the Core” and try to figure out what kind of game it might be. The music is an incredible collection of chiptune-styled, demoscene-sounding songs, but is it enough for our hosts to figure out what they’re listening to?

  • Episode 13 – The Messenger with Composer Rainbowdragoneyes
Freshman development house Sabotage Studio released The Messenger to an excited audience in late August 2018, and the response from players was almost unanimously positive. The Ninja Gaiden-esque gameplay was tight and fun, and the soundtrack was HUGE and featured both NES and Genesis style renditions of nearly every amazing track. On today’s VGMbassy, Ed invites composer Rainbowdragoneyes, aka Eric Brown, to have a chat about the game’s music and development. Since he was brought on-board while the game was in it’s infancy, Eric has a lot of insight about the game’s production as well as commentary on his own soundtrack. Enjoy this in-depth look at what some people are calling indie game of the year!
Check out all of Eric’s bands and side projects at the following links:

  • Episode 12 – Edutainment with Cam Chiles
You’re out of bed early. Your teeth are brushed. Your hair is combed. Your backpack is packed and ready to go. You’re standing at the bus stop before the sun is even up. Why? Because today is your turn on the SCHOOL COMPUTER! On this episode, VGMbassador Cam Chiles (drummer and ringleader of VGM cover band The Mad Gear) shares some fond memories and fun music of the edutainment games he played as a kid, and Ed brings a few of his own along too. It’s a great trip down memory lane for anyone that had a couple of old PCs in the back of their classroom, and you may discover some interesting history behind the composers of these games!

  • Episode 11: East Meets West – Retroworld Expo 2018 VGM Panel with Cam Werme and Rhythm & Pixels
On this bonus episode of The VGMbassy, Ed takes to the stage at Retroworld Expo 2018 in Hartford CT! He’s joined by his pals from the Rhythm & Pixels VGM podcast, Rob and Pernell, and VGMbassador Cam Werme. The theme of this year’s panel is “East Meets West,” in which the guys play selections from each of the major 8 and 16 bit consoles, talk a little about each sound chip, and compare how Japanese and Western composers traditionally used each one. We had a great crowd come out to watch us, and there’s plenty of humor and interesting factoids to listen to!
You can also watch a video of the panel (and subscribe to the new VGMbassy YouTube channel) here:
