The Victorian Murder Case at the Byfleet Inn
News of the Times Episode 413 | 1924
In today’s true crime documentary episode, we travel back to Surrey in 1924, where a shocking and violent death has unfolded. A publican and Inn owner, Mr. Jones, has died suddenly after drinking his usual morning hangover seltzer.
His wife is left both stunned and alarmed, quickly calling the local doctor for help. But tragically, it's too late. Within the hour, Mr. Jones passes away from what appears to be an unexpected poisoning.
An investigation follows, and the cause of death is soon revealed—strychnine. The wife becomes the prime suspect, but the case takes an even more intriguing turn when it's uncovered that she’s been carrying on a passionate affair with a Frenchman she met while abroad. Even more curious, the Frenchman is staying at the very same hotel owned by the late Mr. Jones and his wife.
As Scotland Yard steps in to untangle this web of deceit, romance, and poison, we’ll take a closer look at the background of the case, the investigation, and the final verdict.
And stay tuned until the end of the episode under ur further particulars segment for a lighter, humorous story from 1924—this time, a very different kind of love interest.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
