The Vienna Murders - Serial Killer Hugo Schenk

In today’s episode, it is 1884 Vienna where the crimes of Hugo Schenk, with his brother and a friend, have finally been caught after a murderous spree within Austria but with suspcions of also having crossed into Germany for more murders.

The ploy was through the Victorian version of tinder.  Advertisements went out espousing the wish for a good woman.  Schenk, who was considered quite handsome in his time, would seduce the woman, usually a 30ish housemaid looking to leave service and get married.  The requirement for a marriage to take place was the emptying of her bank account and the bringing of all her best items.

Then, she would be murdered, tied to a rock, and dropped in a ravine or in the Danube.  There are four known murders, but a string of other violent crimes to  his name.  In his day, he was considered Austria’s very worst killer in their history.
