  • The relevance of Monarchs in democratic societies in Africa
Our guest argues that monarchies have evaded questions regarding their relevance and the contemplation of a society where they no longer exist. Initially resisting colonial conquest, traditional leaders reluctantly made compromises throughout the 20th century (e.g.: Bantustans).

Through methods of indirect rule, colonial and apartheid governments manipulated indigenous leaders to control black populations to serve the interests of white domination.

  • #BusinessOnWednesday: Shiba Designs
Kwazi first laid his eyes on a diamond as a toddler. He fondly recalls a time when he was a regular at his father’s workshop, watching his intensity as he designed and moulded the metal until he mastered the piece.

The strides that his father has made in a widely Jewish-White dominated industry and the knowledge that he has accumulated in the many years in the industry made him a seasoned teacher to both him, his uncle and many other designers in the industry.

  • Nation Builder: Partnering for measured impact
There has been a marked decrease in both private sector and government funding to address the social ills in our nation, at a time when social needs have increased dramatically. According to a recent survey by Nation Builder, 72% of NPOs said demand for their services had increased, while experiencing decreased funding.

This means both social investors and implementing organizations, or non-profit organizations (NPOs), urgently have to re-prioritize the effective deployment of resources for the greatest possible long-term, sustainable social impact.

  • #TheAfrikaNarrative
Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on the 24th March to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic.
TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers but global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 63 million lives since the year 2000.

Under the theme - ‘The Clock is Ticking’ – this year’s commemoration conveys the sense that the world is running out of time to act on the commitments to end TB and this is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • TuesdayTakeOver: (Retired) Judge Albie Sachs

Under the Tsar’s rule, Jews throughout the empire were subjected to constant discrimination and frequent outbursts of mob violence, with the open encouragement of the state.

Memories of this oppression informed the Sachs family’s view of their new country, where native Africans were denied many of the rights freely granted to European immigrants.
