Maysene Logistics has been disrupting the status quo by hiring and supporting women to drive 33-tonne dry-bulk tankers. 

The trucking industry has long been recognised as a challenging and predominantly male sector. However, Maysene Logistics, under the leadership of founder Semenya, is breaking these barriers and creating opportunities for women. The company is providing training and employment opportunities for women drivers and proving that gender should never be a limiting factor in empowering women.

The trucking industry in South Africa has recently faced a wave of arson attacks, causing damage and disrupting operations. Maysene Logistics has worked hard to ensure safety and security of its drivers amidst these unfortunate events. The company's commitment to safeguarding its team and assets proves its dedication to maintaining a secure and reliable service.

Last week, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was observed (17 October). According to stats, out of the 1,1 billion poor people around the world 534 million live in sub-Saharan Africa. Experts say if there was a genuine commitment from political leaders and government officers in rooting out corruption, many people would be lifted out of poverty.

Addressing poverty and corruption requires a comprehensive approach that includes legislative and policy frameworks, good governance, ethical leadership, moral and societal values, and community engagement.

A group of academics from various universities have authored a book titled “The Nexus between Poverty and Corruption: Quo Vadis?”. The book delves into the unique challenges African countries face as they try to combat corruption-induced poverty. It offers a perspective that acknowledges the continent’s diversity and the specific dynamics at play in different contexts.

The Constitutional Court has declared as unconstitutional a section of the Divorce Act and it has given Parliament 24 hours to remedy the situation. Ordinarily, an individual married out of community of property without accrual can’t claim from their spouse’s estate if they divorce. This has left many stay-at-home wives at risk of financial ruin should they divorce.

Section 7(3) of the act allows the courts to divvy up the assets in a more fair and equitable way if that individual can show they made a significant non-financial contribution to the marriage. But this only applies if they were married pre-1984, when the option of marriage out of community of property with accrual was introduced in South Africa.
