The former SABC and SAfm staff member Ms Nombulelo Tyawa, whom we all knew as sis Buli. Sis Buli passed away on 10 July 2023.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane was born in Bethal in Mpumalanga in 1970. She graduated with a BProc followed by an LLB from the University of the North (now the University of Limpopo). Subsequently, she obtained a diploma in corporate law and a higher diploma in tax from the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg). In 2010 she completed a Masters in Business Leadership at the University of South Africa.

In 1994 Mkhwebane joined the Department of Justice as a Public Prosecutor, thereafter from 1996 as Legal Administrative Officer in the International Affairs Directorate. In 1998, she joined the South African Human Rights Commission as a senior researcher. The following year, she joined the Public Protector's office as senior investigator and acting provincial representative.

From 2010 to 2014 she worked as Counselor in Immigration and Civic Services in South Africa's embassy in China.

In 2014, she returned to South Africa to serve as a director on country information and cooperation management at the Department of Home Affairs. Mkhwebane then worked as an analyst for the State Security Agency from July 2016 to October 2016 before she was appointed Public Protector in October 2016.

She has also served as a board member for the Refugee Fund, where payments for financial assistance are made for refugees in distress.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is made up of 23 representatives from different structures of the government and South African legal community. Justice Raymond Zondo, the Chief Justice, presides and in his absence, the Deputy Chief Justice. The role of the JSC is to perform an advisory role to the President and national government on any matters relating to the Judiciary or administration of justice.

The JSC also assists in interviewing all of the candidates for the judicial posts available across South Africa and following those interviews the committee makes recommendations for appointment to the bench to the President.

Lastly, the JSC sees to all complaints brought against Judges.

South Africa may still have a chance to maintain the BRICS relationship thanks to Russian President Vladimir Putin's domestic problems, which might assist the rand and regional economies. South African assets have taken a beating in recent weeks due to worries that the nation's close ties to Russia may lead to sanctions and disinvestment. Putin's visit to a BRICS summit in Johannesburg in August would have been the real litmus test of South Africa's loyalty to Russia.

Statistics show that nearly 80% of all foods found in supermarkets in South Africa are over processed and while this may make for a tastier food product – the impact on consumer health is largely concerning. It is high time; we ask ourselves how important the transformation of food is away from over processing to creating food products that promote health both for the consumer and the planet – a key theme for this year’s World Microbiome Day.
