While it may seem like we can just pick and chose between ideologies in reality we are severely restricted by material realities and societal survival of the fittest enforcing nationalism.

It's not just bad in theory, it's also really bad in practice. It has  failed badly in the US, the more centralized european governments have  generally functioned much better allowing the government to do things  like running a functional healthcare system and also doing a better job  at securing valuable freedoms to most inhabitants.
