Adam Yas is a singer/songwriter based in San Francisco. He has served as the frontman for a variety of rock outfits and is currently preparing his first solo release for the fall of 2021 on Trustpasser Records. His sound has been compared to Blonde Redhead, Flaming Lips, and Depeche Mode. I first met Adam around 2010 when he came to see me at UCSF because of some trouble he was having with his singing voice. G.O.L.D. (fka Coco Peila) is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and innovator within Hip Hop and beyond. With the release of her "Pretty Girls" music video and subsequent media campaign, G.O.L.D. aims to lead a “pretty heist,” - busting open the doors of Societal Beauty Standards, a historically exclusive anti-woman, anti-Black, white supremacist club notorious for restricting access from Black women and girls. On the surface, Erik Aadland and I would appear to be very unlikely friends. He is a conservative Republican; I am a Palestinian-American Muslim feminist who doesn’t affiliate with a political party. We met while we were graduate students in the depth psychology program at Pacifica Graduate Institute—which is a fairly unusual place to meet a West Point graduate and former U.S. army officer. And yet, our core ethics and guiding principles have consistently shown us to be more alike than different, often causing me to feel genuinely confused about the distinctions we make between liberals and conservatives, between empowered and disempowered, between those who appear to have a voice and those who do not. In today’s episode of the voice of all things, Erik and I discuss what compelled him to run for a seat in the United States Senate, and the influence of Jungian psychology on his vision for a more harmonious nation, guided by a belief that restoring the balance between masculine and feminine principles will also restore our humanity.
