The Way of Holiness

Yes, we are early this week! We wanted to bring this topic to you on Monday so you could think about how you might want to plan out your week in a way that would open up deeper life with God as we remember the passion of Jesus Christ all the way to Resurrection Day!

In this episode we discuss Why we might create a Holy Week plan, What would be included, and How we can think through putting together a practical but effective approach. The goal is, as we remember all that Jesus did, taught, suffered, and won, how can we cultivate a richer and more meaningful walk with God through this season?

George MacDonald, the Scottish novelist and minister, wrote the following lines in his great work, The Diary of an Old Soul (1880)...

"I search my heart--I search, and find no faith.

Hidden He may be in its many folds--

I see him not revealed in all the world

Duty's firm shape thins to a misty wraith.

No good seems likely. To and fro I am hurled.

I have no stay. Only obedience holds:--

I haste, I rise, I do the thing he saith."

He seems to be tapping into the spirit of David's work in Psalm 42 and it raises a question we have likely all considered at some point, if we are not feeling very close to God should we still serve out of a sense of duty, or should we wait until the feeling of devotion has returned?

We have a topic today that is really fresh on our hearts because we just returned from a weekend retreat, actually a four-day retreat with a group of guys from our church and what we want to do today is offer some encouragement to all of you listening to consider making the investment to do a spiritual retreat like what we have done, and to say that this is worthy of ongoing discipleship ministry for men, and women in your church family.

Welcome back to The Way of Holiness! This week’s topic is HUGE! We need to talk about this, how do we learn to hear from God? This is vital to the Way of Holiness; just think of all the ways we need to hear from God in our day to day. And it is really about cultivating a heart in tune with God, developing those ears to hear so that we can live as people who understand what God is telling us and see how he is leading us.

We will discuss the need for Spiritual Mindedness, Deep Faith, and Genuine Desire, as the means by which we learn to hear God speaking.

This was a hard conversation to wrap up, there is so much to explore in this training in holiness! But in the conclusion of the discussion, Mike and Corey go to Paul's instruction in 1 Timothy 4:7-8 and back to 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 to discuss what spiritual training looks like, which will include three practical methods:

1. Train Together

2. Train with periods of extended separation and abstinence (fasting, abstaining, etc.)

3. Train with a Vision of who You Are Becoming.

The Way of Holiness is not easy, let's just all collectively sigh, admit it, and take a deep breath. Though our good hearts long to walk in the way with Christ, we find ourselves opposed by the weak side of human nature, we commonly call the flesh. We are often in the struggle with the "fleshly lusts which war against our soul" (1 Peter 2:11), but the answer is not simply to try harder, we are going to need to train, to "exercise...unto godliness" (1 Tim. 4:7-8).

This week, Mike, Corey, and Dean discuss the reality of this need, and some of the reasons why walking in the way of holiness is really challenging in this present world, but, here is hope, the way is still in Christ, and he will not fail!
