Spotify has been put into the media thanks to Joe Rogan and Neil Young. However, Spotify has actually been a debated topic for some time now. Journalist, Mark Dent, shares his investigative findings on how the billion dollar streaming service, is failing all of its artists.

Bio: I'm  a journalist based in Dallas and sometimes in the Kansas City area,  where I'm from. I write about business, tech, urbanism, sports,  religion, changing cities and ephemera from the 90s. I'm  currently working on a book about Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes that  is slated to be published in 2023 by Dutton. It tells the history of  Kansas City, Mahomes, and the Chiefs and how the city and Mahomes are  trying to usher in a new era as the city confronts its past and its  inferiority complex. My  work has been published in The New York Times, Texas Monthly, Vox, GQ,  WIRED, Slate, Fortune, VICE, Runner's World, The Kansas City Star, The Philadelphia Inquirer, PolitiFact and Deadline Hollywood among other publications.

In this episode we'll be discussing the Third Front, a covert industrialization campaign that took place between 1964 and 1972 in  China's remote, mountainous interior. This little-discussed campaign  actually formed a crucial part of China's Cold War policy strategy, and  despite its clandestine nature cost billions of yuan in resource and  personnel allocation, as well as for construction and transportation.  The Third Front was part of China's preparations for war with either the  US, the Soviet Union, or their allies in the region, especially after  the US joined the Vietnam War in mid-1964. Major industrial and military  complexes were built in southwest, central-west, and northwestern  provinces, which were also interconnected by new railway lines and  powered by grand hydro-electric dams.

The war on terror began and ended on 9/11 (2001-2021). Today, I spoke with three former military intelligence professionals, about their experiences and knowledge surrounding this war. 

Bios: 

Kyle Reynolds is a former Korean linguist and served as a signals intelligence analyst on board the MC-12W ISR plane in Afghanistan. After leaving the Army, he worked as a political analyst in Southern Afghanistan.

Stu Velasco was an intelligence analyst with 3rd Special Forces Group from 2012-2016 and a contractor from 2016-2020. Stu spent over 5 years in Afghanistan in support of US operations during the Afghan War.

Zach Popp was an intelligence analyst from 2008-2015. During his time in the Army, he deployed to Iraq in 2010. After leaving the Army, he worked as a Kandahar Provincial Analyst for Train Advise and Assist Command-South (TAAC-S) from 2016-2107.

Kyle, Stu, and Zach reunited in 2021, to start the Boardwalk Podcast.

Bio: I'm an author, longtime Boston Globe contributor and freelance journalist. From 1995-2004 I was a pop music and culture critic for the San Francisco Chronicle. I've been an editor for Rolling Stone and a consultant for Pandora and SiriusXM. I teach in the Journalism department at Emerson College.

In my spare time, I am the Program Director and events moderator for the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival and founder of Lit Crawl Boston. I have served as a Library Trustee, an alumni mentor at the University of New Hampshire, and a workshop volunteer at 826 Boston.

Today, Dr. Rob Goodman, author of  Words on Fire: Eloquence and Its Conditions, drops in to discuss rhetoric. From Cicero to Facebook, we delve into the evolution of this integral speaking and writing tool, as well as explore the extreme rhetoric entrenched in modern politics and how this art of persuasion aids the news in problematic ways.

Shortened Bio: Rob Goodman is Assistant Professor of Politics and Public Administration at Ryerson University. He received his Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University in 2018 and was previously a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University. His most recent book, Words on Fire: Eloquence and Its Conditions (Cambridge University Press, 2022), investigates the development of models of skilled speech in classical antiquity, as well as their translation into modern institutional settings. It proposes that these models remain a valuable resource for critiquing the current state of political speech. Rob is also the co-editor of Populism, Demagoguery, and Rhetoric in Historical Perspective (Oxford University Press, under contract). His current research project, Black Cicero: Race and American Oratory, is funded by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant.

Before beginning his doctoral studies, Rob worked as speechwriter for U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Senator Chris Dodd. At Columbia, Rob worked as a Core Curriculum instructor and was a Heyman Center for the Humanities Fellow. His paper "Edmund Burke and the Deliberative Sublime" was the co-winner of the Review of Politics Award for best paper in normative political theory at the 2016 Midwest Political Science Association Conference.
