In today’s Gospel reading Jesus appears to his disciples for the third time after His resurrection at the Sea of Tiberias, where they are found attempting to fish. Simon Peter and a few other disciples were present. It was evening. Peter went fishing and the other disciples followed. It so happened that they caught no fish. When the morning had come, unbeknownst to the disciples, Jesus stood by the shores and told the disappointed disciples to go back into the sea and fish again, this time casting their nets to the right side of the boat. The result was amazing! They not only caught enough fish, but more than they needed.

In the Gospel reading taken from John 20:19-31, thedisciples were in hiding. Then, in the place they were hiding, with the door closed, Jesus appeared before them. Jesus doesn’t say, “hello,” or “how have you been,” but He says, “Peace be with you.” Subsequently, Jesus shows them his wounds, both on his hands and side. The disciples, hiding from the Jews, for fear of persecution, were glad to see their teacher once again. But then, after “giving peace” a second time, and giving the directive to go and preach the Gospel, He does something that is very peculiar—He breathes the Holy Spirit on them.

We don’t have to go far to the see the evidence of the risen Christ. St. Athanasius the Great says, ‘It’s not the empty tomb in Jerusalem that many people flock to and venerate that is the evidence of the resurrection. Rather, we are the evidence of the resurrection.” Are we the evidence of the resurrected Christ? When others see or hear us, would they say he or she is the evidence of the resurrected Christ?

Judas was one of the Apostles of Jesus. This means like the other Apostles, he walked with Christ, eat with Christ, etc. When Jesus was teaching, preaching and healing, Judas was there. There was a certain level of intimacy that Jesus shared with His Apostles, and Judas, like it or not, was a recipient of that. Jesus invested time and energy into Judas, and even, we can assume, a certain level of trust. But in the end, Judas betrayed Jesus. We can only imagine the feelings of betrayal that Jesus was experiencing. Today, Fr. Gheevarghese offers reflections on this.
