Kevin Bishop and Marianne Vogel of the Golden Scroll Soloists join Regina and Cate to talk about the string music ensemble group's fifteen years of experience and everything they've learned in that time.

Kevin and Marianne educated us about what sets wedding musicians apart from concert players and how they accommodate clients' wide array of musical tastes with their custom musical arrangements.

We had a few good laughs as they reminisced about some particularly memorable weddings, and we bonded over those inevitable lessons you only have to learn once in business before never letting it happen again.

Dr. Ilona Shternfeld is the owner of Inner Glow Aesthetics MD, a medical spa in Avon, Connecticut. Dr. Ilona joins Regina and Cate to talk about how our looks do and don't affect our mental state, feminism and aesthetic medicine, why her original expertise as an eye surgeon helps put her clients' anxieties to rest and when you should schedule certain procedures if having them done before your wedding day.

We spent a lot of time talking about the potentially addictive nature of cosmetic procedures, and we really benefited from hearing Dr. Ilona's straightforward, honest thoughts about how to manage peoples' expectations around changing the way they look. Surprisingly, we wound up talking about themes we've discussed time and again on this show: honesty, good boundaries, and deep listening for what people are truly asking when they request a particular service.

Part of our conversation was a fascinating exploration of how medical and aesthetic treatments often intertwine, and Dr. Ilona nerded out about the difference between male and female facial anatomy, different kinds of muscles, and facial balance. 

In the end, her basic message about aesthetic medicine is simple: make choices for yourself, never for anyone else. 

Oh, and never tell anyone they look tired.

Dr. Ilona was a wealth of information, and her candor and expertise on the subject were truly delightful.

Myke Ross is the band leader of Le'Mixx Band, a wedding band out of Hamden, Connecticut. Myke and band member Randy joined Regina and Cate to talk about their longtime love of seventies music, growing up playing music together, and how a DJ just can't rival the energy of an eight-piece band. They're two totally different beasts.

We talked about how Le'Mixx Band brings the party to any wedding, providing lights, energy, and all different kinds of music throughout any and all parts of a wedding. 

They regaled us with stories about their history together as young friends who ran into each other later in life, and we laughed over how fate can bring people together at Stop N' Shop. When asked if there's something that people who seek them out all have in common, Myke answered without missing a beat, 'Well, they're hip." That pretty much sums up our interview with them.

Myke and Randy were delightfully laid-back and easy to talk to, and they stoked the flame for wanting to see live music again!

Morgan Ofsharick is the owner of MEO Photography, a photography company based in Connecticut. Morgan joins Regina and Cate to talk about how photography went from a casual hobby to an obsession and how the pandemic forced her to plunge headfirst into doing photography full-time.

We talked at length about why Morgan focuses her attention on intimate weddings, and Morgan explained her process of coming to understand what's 'mandatory' and what's not as a photographer--finding the gray areas where she can pick and choose what really matters to her and what lights her up.

She reiterated why you don't want to hire a photographer solely based on price (a common theme on this podcast), and we talked about the value of choosing your photographer wisely. She was also really forthcoming about the challenges of pricing yourself, and she and Cate talked shop about being perfectionists in a creative field. Morgan's main thing is to RESEARCH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER before booking them!

Morgan was wonderfully chatty, and we had so much fun talking photography with her!

Paula DeLuise is the owner of The Best Day Ever Events by Paula, a wedding planning and event day-of coordination business based in New York and serving the tri-state region. Paula joins Regina and Cate to talk about how her big Italian family and childhood passion for throwing parties inspired her to start her business, and about being in that movie with Liam Hemsworth (two of the three of them on the podcast were swooning pretty hard).

We talked about how Paula's career in the entertainment industry (she's a dancer) has helped shape her approach to weddings, and we spent some time talking about the importance of a good first impression AND about continually renewing our clients' trust in us over time.

Unlike most wedding planners/coordinators, Paula focuses entirely on wedding day management. Her goal is to work with clients who have already painstakingly planned their big day but don't want to be responsible for pulling it all off--they want to be present for their own party! She's super clear about what she loves to do and who she serves, and it was great talking to a vendor with such a specific niche and purpose.

Paula was lovely, easy to talk to, and so professional. We hope you enjoy this episode!

Irma Garcia is the owner of Earth and Sun Co., a photography and videography company based in Rhode Island and serving all of New England and beyond. Irma joins Regina and Cate to talk about how her passion bled from photography to videography and back again, why pretending to be someone you're not will always lead to failure, and the impact of aligned branding on reaching the right clients.

We talked at length about why and how Irma overcommunicates upfront with potential clients, and Irma explained how the responsibilities and time commitment of photographers and videographers differ, from the perspective of someone who does both.

All three of us connected over the theme of learning to be our authentic selves with clients, and finding clients who are looking for exactly what we do best instead of trying (and inevitably failing) to be perfect for everyone. We got real about the impact COVID has had on our businesses and our lives, and (as usually happens) Irma described a learning experience that was especially hard for her, but ultimately helped her grow her business to heights she never expected. As she said, "It wouldn't be a business if you weren't crying some nights."

Irma was down to earth, clear as a bell about what she does and who she does it for, and we loved having her on as a guest!

David Lang is an officiant and owner of Love, Honor, and Cherish, based in Vernon, CT. He serves all of Connecticut. David joins Regina and Cate to crack them up, talk about wonderfully nerdy weddings, and explain why there are photos of him officiating in a dinosaur costume on his website.

David regaled us with a variety of delightful stories and shocked us with the number of weddings he officiates each year. He is a full-time middle school English teacher, so Love, Honor, and Cherish remains his fun, part-time job--and as such, he gets to be "as relaxed as he wants to be" about it, forgoing complicated contracts and retainers in favor of keeping things simple. 

As we got to know David better throughout the interview, we came to understand who his ideal couples are--hint, they're usually slightly offbeat and have unique ideas for their weddings--and thus, we all have that in common! David also explained how his teaching career has informed his role as an officiant, and the adage, 'you can never teach the same lesson twice' proves as true for weddings as it does for the classroom.

David was an incredibly charming, fun guest, and we both hope to work with him at weddings in the future! We know they'll be incredibly thoughtful, likely funny, and they may even include a unicycle.

Anna Powers is the owner of Seacoast Ceremonial Music, a wedding and event music ensemble business based in Kittery, Maine and serving most of New England. Anna joins Regina and Cate to discuss the weddings that have made a home in her heart, why learning the hard way is inevitable as a business owner, and that time she and her fellow musicians learned the theme song to Mortal Combat.

We talked at length about giving up control and learning to delegate, and Anna and Regina commiserated over the struggles of balancing a business with a full-time job. (Anna is a social studies teacher when she's not playing the flute or managing her business!)

Anna also recounted some memorable song choices her clients have made, and we chatted about popular ceremonial songs she recommends. We also discussed the hidden costs of running a business--particularly one involving musical instruments!--and how much you can learn about a person when you discover the music that speaks to their heart. Anna was lovely to talk to, and as always, we learned so much from her unique perspective on a wedding!

Carly Kyd is the creator and owner of Queenie's Cocktail Bar, a mobile cocktail bar based out of Simsbury, Connecticut. In our delightful and light-hearted conversation, we learned about Queenie's origin story, the hilarity of trial-testing drinks (the words 'pond sludge' and 'frog spawn' may have been uttered), and why Carly's husband and fellow bartender often gets sidetracked by guests towards the end of the night.

Carly was also straightforward about the challenges of starting an alcohol-based business in Connecticut AND about how it felt to have her first full year in business be 2020! We learned that gin isn't nearly as popular here as it is in England (and possibly spent way too much time delving into the hows and whys of this mystery), and she taught us a new tip for how to successfully pee in a wedding dress.

Carly was a delight to chat with, and learning about her bespoke creations and how they bring life to any party made Regina and Cate want to sit outside, gins in hand, and listen to Carly's lovely British accent some more.
