In this episode of The Week In Waves, Spinksy sits down with Steve Kilbey, frontman, bassist and songwriter of iconic Australian band The Church, for a relaxed and remarkably candid conversation about music, creativity, second chances and finding a new rhythm in life.

From his new home at Smiths Lake on the NSW Mid Coast, Steve reflects on leaving Sydney behind, becoming a homeowner again and the gratitude he feels after rebuilding his life and getting what he describes as a second bite at the cherry.

There’s plenty for Church fans too. Steve reveals the story behind the band’s long-awaited new album Lacuna, recorded in 2024 and finally heading for release, along with plans to reissue parts of The Church’s back catalogue on vinyl. He also takes us inside the return of Psychedelic Symphony, explaining how the orchestral shows came together and why working with conductor and arranger George Ellis brings something special to The Church’s music.

The conversation goes in some unexpected directions as well. Steve talks about his lifelong fascination with Hannibal, the childhood trading card that started it all and how that obsession eventually became the Vale of Tears comic series and an upcoming graphic novel.

Steve also opens up about David Bowie, tribute shows, touring America, painting, family, his dog Truscott, his love of Bali, and why he's currently experimenting with something completely different — retirement.

And while Spinksy might be determined to get him on a surfboard one day, Steve makes his position on becoming a surfer pretty clear!

About Our Guest – Clive Rodell

For Season 2, Episode 1 of The Week In Waves with Spinksy, we're joined by one of surfing and strength & conditioning's most experienced minds, Clive Rodell. With over five decades of experience in athletic development, coaching, surfing, and performance training, Clive has built a reputation as a mentor who combines practical knowledge, innovation, and a deep understanding of human performance.

Clive's career spans professional surfing, elite athlete development, strength and conditioning coaching, fitness education, and international speaking engagements. Originally from Cornwall in the UK, he competed, coached, judged, and organized surfing events before moving to Australia, where he became heavily involved in the country's surfing and performance training scene. Over the years he has worked with professional surfers, Olympians, musicians, and athletes across a wide range of sports.

A respected mentor and educator, Clive has lectured in fitness and sport, developed training courses, mentored coaches and personal trainers, and delivered presentations both in Australia and internationally. His expertise is particularly recognized in exercise technique, injury prevention, strength and conditioning, and surf-specific performance training.

Throughout his career, Clive has worked alongside elite athletes including World Champion surfer Layne Beachley, Olympian Liane Fenwick, professional surfers on the ASP/WQS tours, and many other high-performing competitors. His philosophy centres on individualized coaching, long-term athlete development, and helping people achieve better results while reducing injury risk.

Beyond the gym and coaching arena, Clive continues to contribute to the surfing community through surf fitness education, mentoring, writing, and athlete development. His wealth of experience and unique perspective make him an ideal guest to kick off Season 2 of The Week In Waves with Spinksy.
