As we prepare for the holiday of Shavuos, I can't help but think about my own experiences and the significance of this joyous occasion. From shopping for new Yom Tov clothing for the kids to setting up our learning schedules for the night, we go all in to celebrate this holy holiday. But sometimes, amidst the hustle and bustle, we may overlook the true meaning and power of Shavuot. At the core of Shavuos, we find exuberant celebration and gratitude for being chosen by God to learn His Torah and walk in His ways. The Gemara says that on Shavuos, we all agree that we must celebrate with cheesecake and our parties because we should be proud of being chosen as children of God. I'll share a personal story about recognizing the significance and joy of our unique and special mission and how lucky we are to have been chosen by God. Baruch Dayan Ha'Emes: The Stamford Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Meir Hershkowitz, has returned his soul to his Maker. We mourn the loss of a Torah giant who devoted his life to studying and teaching the Torah. His legacy lives on through the thousands of Talmidim he has taught around the globe and the generations of Torah he has Meyased. May his memory be a blessing.

As his funeral and levaya take place, we are reminded of his immense impact on the Jewish community. He co-founded Yeshiva Bais Binyomin in Stamford, Connecticut, alongside Rav Simcha Schustal, zt" l, and was the Rosh Yeshiva for many years. 

Rav Hershkowitz was not just a Rosh Yeshiva but a beloved father and father-in-law. He was the father of Mrs. and father-in-law of Rabbi Ezra Neuberger, an inspiration to many.

Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and students during this challenging time. May they find comfort and solace in the Torah he taught and his positive influence on the world.

Parshas Acharei Mos and Kedoshim are two of the most well-known Torah portions in the Jewish tradition, mainly due to their focus on sacrifice and atonement. The portion begins with God instructing Moses regarding the ritual of Yom Kippur, which requires the High Priest to enter the inner sanctum of the Tabernacle and make atonement for himself, his family, and all of Israel. 

The central theme of this portion is teshuva (repentance). It offers guidance on how to repent and achieve forgiveness from God. This message is further reinforced by various mitzvos that are introduced during this Parsha - such as: not eating blood or any other offerings made to idols; abstaining from incest and adultery; avoiding specific prohibitions of Shabbas, such as the lighting of a fire; and observing the laws related to kosher food. 

In addition, Parshas Acharei Mos emphasizes the importance of charity and hospitality towards others. For example, it discusses how we should help those in need and assist strangers looking for a place to stay or a meal. This section also details specific regulations regarding handling animal remains after slaughtering – an act of kindness demonstrating our respect for all living creatures.

Sefiras HaOmer is an extraordinary time of the year for all Jews. The countdown of Sefiras HaOmer begins on Pesach night when we count 49 days until Shavuos - The Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.
