  • Podcast 24 - 6 MONTHS!!!
    Podcast 24: 6 MONTHS!
Welcome to our six months anniversary! Longer than the average millennial relationship.
Beer #1 (Studio) : Action Bronson’s 7000 - Stillwater Artisanal Ales (Action Bronson X Stillwater Collab - 4.5% Sour Ale) Lot’s of lemon taste, sour enough to make you pucker.
Jake went to Backlash’s soft open! Congrats to them for opening their taproom. Someone in Boston recognized the Dancing Gnome logo on Jake’s hat! He was hopeful for the place, but overall not a very outstanding experience out of the gate.
We got into pricing and pour sizes throughout breweries and bars.
Jake educated us on what a “Masshole” is… (A Massachusetts Asshole)
Beer #2 (Studio) : Johann and the Giant Peach - Aslin Beer Company (9.4% Double IPA) This beer was super chunky. The name makes you think this will be a milkshake style IPA but it definitely doesn’t drink like one. Its got a hint of peach flavor but the vanilla was lost and this beer might’ve sat for too long. Overall it wasn’t a great experience but we powered through.
Nick and Alex went to Drag Bingo at Couch Brewery! We had an absolute blast of a time even though we didn’t win anything. We tried D’s Road Dogs for the first time! Great hot dogs loaded with toppings and the fries were delicious. Couch had Atomic Meltdown back on draft and it was SUPER spicy this time around.
Beer #1 (Boston) : Permutation #55 - Trillium Brewing (5.7% Gose) Guava and lime shine through with hints of pineapple, pomegranate and orange making it a super citrusy ride. Jake really liked this beer.
Alex was ALL over the place on Saturday! Dancing Gnome, Stick City, Strange Roots and Leaning Cask were all on the list.
Alex gave his review of Stick City and his distain for gourmet pizza. Then he was exposed to cask beers at Leaning Cask.
Beer #3 (Studio) : Extra Dry - Stillwater (4.2% Dry Sake Saison style Ale) Crisp drinking and very refreshing. It’s really dry on the finish and not a lot of nose. We really enjoyed the can design on this one.

  • Podcast 23 9.16.18
Podcast 23: Nobody likes you when you’re 23!
The Michael Jordan episode starts off with a bang of a conversation.
Beer #1 (Boston) : Half Acre Vallejo (6.7% IPA) Jake found Half Acre in Boston. Surprise, we’re enamored with the can design. Jake really liked the beer overall
Beer #1 (in the studio) : Fruity Nuggets - 450 North (DDHIPA 7.2% Columbus, IN) Shout out to @kushisforlosers for the hook up with this Hazy IPA from out west. Golden color, fruity nose and a citrusy taste. Alex loves the can design on this one too.
This week find Nick and Alex at Drag Bingo at Couch Brewery on 9/19 from 7:30-9:30!
Alex went to the Baja 1000 can release at Couch on Friday.
Jake is still wanting Backlash Brewing to open! (Here’s a hint: They are doing a soft (extremely soft) open on Thursday 9/20)
9/30 - The Weekly ReCap at Couch Brewery! Slight change here, we’ll be doing a live podcast from the brewery, but it’ll be after they close so submit your questions for the brewer Cary and we’ll make sure to ask him!
Jake had a few beers this week that he never had before.
We discuss the nuanced style of Oktoberfest biers.
Beer #2 (in studio) : Glitter Parts Pineapple - Levante Brewing (NEIPA - 7.0%) Alex loves this beer. It tastes like straight up pineapple juice. Nick doesn’t love it.
Nick and Sara’s anniversary took them to a new spot in Lawrenceville called Walter’s Southern Barbecue. Go check these guys out. Amazing food and a great tap list.
    Beer #2 (Boston) : Bright w/ Citra - Treehouse (Citra NEIPA - 7.2%)
Hair watch 2018 is back! Jake has been growing it back out.
Jake and Nick discuss fall beers/oktoberfest beers.
Beer #3: Purp the Magic Dragon - Burley Oak (Dragonfruit/Stone Fruit Sour Ale 4.4%) Super sour and very juicy. Easy drinking and not much alcohol taste due to the light ABV.
Jake plays devil’s advocate and wants to see the bubble burst and craft beer growth will settle out.
We also hit on beer sitting on a shelf and not getting the product that the brewery wants you to have.
Have a good week and send in your questions for Couch Brewery!

  • Podcast 22 : It was the Modern Times
    Podcast 22:
We kick it off with weirdness… surprise.
    RIP Mac Miller
New Segment! Brewery of the Week!
BOTW : Modern Times Beer - Opened in 2013, they are distributed in Pittsburgh and Boston, but mostly their standard beers and a couple rare releases. Hit the link at the bottom for their full write up and listen along to our description.
Beer #1: Fruitlands - Modern Times Beer (San Diego, CA - Sour Tropical Fruit Gose 4.8% ABV) Passionfruit and guava on the nose, not as tart as expected with a sour finish. The gose style lends to the saltiness, but its not as strong as some gose's we’ve had.
Jake filled us in on a brewery called Democracy Brewing in Boston after his excursion to Fenway for a Red Sox game.
Nick went to Shubrew’s 5th anniversary party and picked up a lot of Rainbow Road.
    Upcoming events:
9/19 - Drag Bingo @ Couch (Couch Brewery - Pittsburgh, PA)
9/29 - Dancing Gnome Anniversary Party (Dancing Gnome/Hop Culture - Sharpsburg, PA)
9/30 - The Weekly ReCap at Couch Brewery! (Couch Brewery - Pittsburgh, PA)
Beer #2: Triple Cherry Berry J.R.E.A.M. - Burley Oak (Burley Oak Brewing Company - Berlin, MD 9.0% ABV) Super dark reddish purple color makes you want to drink this beer. The lactose mellows out the tart flavors of the cherry and raspberry making it a creamy drinking sour.
We wrap up this week’s podcast with a bit of a discussion on what’s to come and we’ll be back next week with even more exciting events and more announcements!

  • Podcast 21 - We Have a Guest!
Podcast 21: We Have a Guest!
Our first guest appearance! Welcome Austin!
Beer #1: Key Lime Pie Whole Punch - Hitchhiker Brewing : Jake’s first experience, it definitely sat for a little longer than ideal but still tasted ok.
We drill Austin about his beer drinking history and how Lancaster sucks/doesn’t suck.
From there we devolved into a discussion about pop punk and emo and metal music.
Beer #2: Triple Lustra - Dancing Gnome : Jake and Austin’s first time having this. Jake doesn’t believe how smooth this is for clocking in at 11%. Check out our post-Lustra day podcast for our full review.
Austin gets roasted, but he can take it.
We revisited the flagship beer discussion and expanded it to beer descriptions and what we’re enjoying and want to see more of at these breweries.
Nick, Alex and Sara visited Couch and Abjuration on Friday. We share our experience and a crazy Friday night.
Beer #3: Half Lustra - Dancing Gnome
Nick and Alex are heading to Shubrew for their 5th anniversary party this coming week.
Beer #4: Kaboom Candy 2 (Blueberry + Pomegranate) - Grist House : After a few weeks in the fridge, it was mellowed out a lot on the sour and not much loss of fruit flavor.
Austin talks through his experience with Sours and what kind of beers he usually gravitates toward and then we rapid fire questions at him.
Beer #5: Burn Your Suit - Eleventh Hour : Lower in alcohol than most BA stouts. Lots of chocolate on the nose but heavy coffee notes and the bourbon rounds it out well without being overbearing. Aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels.
    Thanks for listening!

Jake’s Beer: Very Green - Treehouse Brewery (8.3% DIPA)
Nick and Alex went to the Pittsburgh Brewery Guide release party!
Beer 1: I Seen The Light - Mango Helles Lager (Rock Bottom, Roundabout, Helicon) Kinda like a crafty version of IC Light Mango.
Beer 2: Basileus - Basil Saison (Hop Farm, War Streets Brewery, Leaning Cask) Lots of basil flavor, dry and refreshing saison.
Beer 3: Red Bines - Amber Ale (Dancing Gnome, Hofbrauhaus, Penn Brewery) Great drinking, solid red beer. Lots of malt flavor and well balanced.
Beer 4: Open Sesame - Brown Session Ale (Spoonwood, Pittsburgh Bottleshop, Church BrewWorks) Possibly the best beer of the festival. Very dark color, but still extremely light and crushable. We loved this one
Beer 5: Gluteus Minimus - Gluten-Free Tulsi Tea Saison (Aurochs, East End, Cinderlands) Alex was a huge fan. Lots of tea flavor and each brewery’s style came through in this beer.
Beer 6: Watermelon Farmhouse Ale - Blended Farmhouse Ale (Allegheny City, Strange Roots) Definitely had a lot of watermelon flavor but still sour.
Beer 7: Milton the Toaster Style - Toaster Pastry Stout (Hitchhiker, Southern Tier, Rivertowne) This one was a great balance of stout and the smores pop tart flavor.
Beer 8: Get Out of Tahn - Dry Hopped Norwegian Farmhouse Ale (Grist House, Cobblehaus, CoStar) More pronounced hop flavors but still had the farmhouse character. Dry and light drinking.
Beer 9: El Collabo - Brett IPA (Couch, Abjuration, Eleventh Hour) We weren’t too keen on this one, but we do appreciate the expansion of the style usage. The brett didn’t really shine through in this one.
Beer 10: A Mind Full of Weeds - Cream Ale made with Bloody Butcher Corn (Mindful, Full Pint) Very much a cream ale. As a late entry in the day we didn’t really get the full effect.
Studio Beer #1: Konkey Dong 4UP - Hoof Hearted Brewery (Quadruple Dry-Hopped Triple IPA 9.5%) Thanks Sean P! for the share! Sara didn’t like a triple, surprise! Nick liked the beer, Alex found it to be easy to drink.
From there the conversation went to the new releases we tried this week and beer trades that we’ll have coming up.
We’re going to have a new segment called the brewery of the week, where we’ll highlight a beer from them and focus on something outside of Pittsburgh.
Shoutout to our social media follows! Follow Keygen (@djkb412) and The Brew Brotha (@thebrewbrotha)
Jake will be in Pittsburgh this coming weekend!
Beer #2: Spy Dolphin - Dancing Gnome (8.5% DIPA) We’ve had this one before, not much has changed, its a great brew.
    Tune in next week!

We open with pop culture references and dating app advice.
Beer #1: Die Hard is Not a Christmas Movie - Dancing Gnome/The Brew Brotha (DIPA 8.5%) : A FreshFest Collab! Dancing Gnome collaborations have a trend of being more hop forward and less about the hazy fruit tastes. This one is no different. Easy drinking for 8.5% but still packed full of flavor.

We ran down the list of beers pouring at the Brewery Guide kick off!
We discuss the up and coming breweries and our impressions.
Beer #2: Supplication - Russian River Brewing (BA Sour Ale 7.75%) After a couple months, this one mellowed out but it held its funky nose. The taste is not very tart but still gets a lot of the wine barrel flavor.
Alex and Nick move into can releases and then dive into the Dancing Gnome/Hop Culture anniversary line up. These are some of the most heavy hitting breweries around the country all under one roof! Nick makes up where he thinks the breweries are. Spoiler Alert: He’s wrong a LOT!
Alex visited Strange Roots in Millvale, PA this week for some new releases. He is very excited about their new IPA releases. These are not your typical IPA variations. They’re more of a wild fermented style IPA.
Beer #3: Triple Lustra - Dancing Gnome (Triple IPA 11.0%) We discussed this beer a couple weeks ago, but its mellowed a little bit. Still drinks like a double at most.
We then recap Dancing Gnome’s releases for the week and wrap up the week.

We discuss the punny beer name.

Beer #2: Stillwater Artisanal Ales - Nutropic IPA with Mango and Passionfruit (6%) Sour feel but not actually a sour. Interesting feel and light drinking.
Alex researched Stillwater. They don’t have their own brewery but they brew on other people’s systems and can through a Brooklyn establishment who cans and distributes their beer. They’re very in touch with their social media as well, and we love them.
Lustra Day! - The line was INSANE! 400+ people in line before 9 am. The line shares were flowing and Dancing Gnome was on their game! They took care of everyone and they had a surprise tapping of Black Clouds Breakfast which was amazing! Each beer was incredible and worth the time spent in line and the bar was moving smoothly and everyone seemed to be in great spirits.
We discussed our disgust with line jumpers again.
We picked up Urban Evidence from Hitchhiker after Lustra Day and it is a killer DIPA.
Alex worked at The 13th Annual North Country Brewfest pouring wine. He got to hangout with a bunch of local, mostly western PA breweries. His favorite of the day was Missing Link from Ellwood City, PA - Tropical Mist IPA
Beer #3: Voodoo Brewing - Unicorn Farts NE IPA (8.2%) This one doesn’t really have enough flavor for as sought after as it was. Its smooth but not a lot of flavor to really keep you interested.
