we lose the room.

One day it just ends. No announcement. No dramatic finish. Just a final game… a handshake line… and suddenly the rink is quiet. The game will move on without you.

Let’s stop lying to ourselves. We have assistant coaches who agree in private and disappear in public. We have managers who see the chaos and choose neutrality. We have reasonable parents who whisper support but won’t say it out loud. And then we act shocked when the strongest voice in the room walks away. That’s the truth.

They’re not in my inbox. They’re not in the stands muttering. They’re not counting shifts. They’re watching their kid. Not the scoreboard. Not the other players. Their kid. The parents who get it understand something powerful:

Hockey is development — not validation.
