Search "jobs for people over 50" and you get a thousand articles. Side hustles, gig apps, be a greeter. Every one of them written by somebody who has never been 50 and watched their phone stop ringing. It's guesswork built to sell you an ad.
So I didn't do that. This one is the receipts.
After my last video on age discrimination after 50, thousands of you weighed in. So I read them, and this episode is what you told me. The real jobs people are actually landing. What it's costing them. The pay cuts, the starting over, and the ways through that are actually working. Straight from the comment section, not a Google list.
I'm not walking anything back. Age discrimination after 50 is real, it's worse than people admit, and for a lot of people it's starting at 45, 40, even 35. The receipts prove that too. And if you're younger and you think this can't touch you yet, this is your warning to build your exit before somebody builds it for you.
I'm a former teacher and disabled veteran, documenting my own way out of the rat race. I'm not a financial advisor and I'm not selling you anything.
I'm 51. I taught school for 18 years, served in two branches of the military, raised my son as a single dad, drove three hours a day, and did everything the plan asked. And I'm done with the rat race.
This episode is the whole plan. The final straw that ended my teaching career. What I actually have in savings and what I don't, full disclosure, no magic number. Why the coast won even though everyone told me it's too expensive. Where in South Carolina I'm actually going, and the one obstacle down there I didn't see coming. The house that has to sell first, and why it's the engine of this entire thing. And the honest version of semi-retirement for four or five years, because I won't have enough to do nothing, and neither will most of us.
No montage. No $500,000 portfolio. Just a real exit, in order, from a guy actually doing it.
If you're done too, or getting there, tell me where you're at in the comments. You didn't fail. The white picket fence did.
Not a financial advisor. Just a guy working his own exit and showing you the real math of a real life.
Before I recorded the video that changed everything, I made a deal with myself. One more video. If it did what all my others did, 60 views and silence, I was done. Quietly. No announcement.
That video was "I'm Walking Away From It All." And then the comments started. And they didn't stop.
In this episode I read them. The short ones, the long ones, and yes, some of the ones that came after me. The 41 years in the oilpatch. The grandmother's house. The widow who hasn't figured it all out yet but doesn't need much. The bootstraps guy. All of it.
Because here's what I found out reading every single comment: I thought I was alone in feeling done at 51. Turns out we're a much bigger group than any of us knew. Sweden, Morocco, New Zealand, Qatar, and every corner of the US. Different lives, same sentence.
If you're new here: I'm 51. I taught school for 18 years, served in the military, did everything the script demanded, and came out the other side with almost nothing saved and a job market that won't return my calls. So I'm walking away and building a different life on camera. This channel is the documented exit.
I fell asleep on the couch and woke up to a 12-year-old girl with a ukulele singing about not playing by the rules of the game. A rerun from 2016. I watched it live back then, clapped along with everybody else, and got up the next morning and followed every single rule she was singing about. For ten more years.
This episode is the question that rerun wouldn't let go of. Who actually wrote the rules we've all been living by? Who do they serve? Why did we buy in when nobody ever asked us to agree to them? And what happens when a 51-year-old finally puts the rulebook down?
Fair warning before the comments beat me to it: I called it American Idol in the episode. It was America's Got Talent. I taught school for 18 years and still got that one wrong. We move on.
In this episode:
Next episode, I'm going to do the thing I didn't do here: read you my actual new rules. The short list I'm living by now. If there's a rule you've stopped following, or one you want to stop following, put it in the comments. I read every one, and they shape where this show goes.
I'm Kevin. I'm 51. I served in two branches of the military and taught school for 18 years, and somewhere along the way I figured out the system we were all told to trust wasn't going to work out for me.
This is the long version of how I got here. The whole story, the one a lot of people have asked me for. What wore me down to the point of selling almost everything I own and starting over from scratch. If you've ever felt like you did everything right and still ended up behind, this one's for you.
This is the first episode of White Picket Rebellion, a podcast for people who are done with the rat race and weren't handed a fat retirement account to walk away on. I'm not a financial advisor and I'm not an expert. I'm just a regular guy trying to find a way off the hamster wheel without a big portfolio, and bringing you along while I figure it out.
If any of this sounds like your life, follow the show so you don't miss what's next, and come find me in the comments on YouTube to tell me your story. That's the whole point of this thing.
